You could try patching the game to an earlier wave as you won't be using Xbox Live, but if that doesn't work, then yes - you're forced to update. Also, wave 13 is out now too which contains the very latest dashboard update, so all games going forward will probably be wave 13 until wave 14 comes along and so on.
Another disadvantage of patching the waves of games is that if your console ever breaks and you get another one, or you just decide to get another unbanned one to use Live, you'd have to repatch and reburn all of your games. It's easier to just tackle it via a dashboard/firmware update and forget about patching every single game you burn to an earlier wave.
If you want to update: -
1. Flash back to stock - not doing this is what's getting lots of people in a mess
2. Update the dashboard to the latest version
3. Flash to LT+ 1.91
4. Ensure that if you have any AP2.5 games, that they are patched with the latest AP2.5 data

That's what I figured. So last question, around flashing back to stock. I have the latest 1.91 pack, and I'm looking at a ton of different stock firmware, is there an easy way to pick which I should use? My drive is a BenQ.
I also still have my OFW file from when I first flashed, if that's another option.

Whether you can use that backup of your OFW depends on the following.
You CAN use it if: -
1. You have not updated your dashboard at all since dumping it, regardless of the dashboard version.
2. You have updated your dashboard, but you're on dashboard version 2.0.12625.0 or earlier.
EDIT - Reading your earlier post, it seems that the above does apply to you as you're on 2.0.12625, so yes, you can use your OFW backup. Once you have updated the dashboard though, that old backup will no longer be any use as the firmware on your drive will be flashed to a new stock firmware. What you can do is flash back to stock, update the dash, dump the firmware again (and keep that as your new backup as the old one is no longer relevant), then flash with LT+ 1.91.
You can NOT use it if: -
1. You dumped the OFW when you were on dashboard 2.0.12625.0 or earlier, but you have since updated to dashboard 2.0.13146.0 or later. If that's the case, you will need to use stock firmware version 04421C which you can download online, then inject your key into it.
Also, if you have any of the 6 games currently affected by AP2.5, remember to run the burned discs through abgx360 to ensure that the AP2.5 patches are current, because the AP2.5 tables have been updated and if that data is out of date, trying to boot one of those games will immediately flag your console for a ban, even if you're offline.
EDIT - And because you are currently using dashboard 2.0.12625.0, the paragraph above will definitely apply to you, so make absolutely sure that if you have any of the following games, you repatch and reburn them: -
Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
Halo: Reach
Black Ops
Modern Warfare 2
Need For Speed: Shift
Fable 3
LT 1.91 contains no protection against AP2.5 games that are unpatched, badly patched, or patched with out of date data, so one mistake and your console will be flagged.

Thanks for all the help! Yep, my OFW is from before 2.0.12625, so I will use that, go back to stock, update dash, and dump the new OFW.
Out of curiousity, you mentioned injecting my key into the 04421C that came with the pack. Is there a tut on how to do that? I dont see it (or I might be missing it) in the JF tutorial.

If you've flashed a console before then you've already done that. Perhaps it's just the terminology I chose.
When you flash a console for the first time, you dump the OFW. Then you have your CFW that you've downloaded, but it doesn't have your console's key in it. In JungleFlasher, or whatever method you use, the key is taken from your OFW and injected into the CFW, then you flash your console with the CFW. That's all I mean. It's not some special process that you have to do now or anything like that.
BTW, go back and read my edits to my last post, particularly the one about AP2.5 at the bottom because it will definitely affect you if you're going from 2.0.12625.0 to 2.0.13599.0.

Ah ok. Thanks again for all your help! Regarding the AP2.5 games, the console is banned already, but I'll definitely reburn if I plan to play them again.

so you're saying that I can't use the stock firmware that came with drive when I got the xbox if I've updated my dash to a certain point? so how exactly am I suppose to know what exact firmware to put on my drive? "benq" & another note I unhooked drive from console & it still shows update screen... and on another note its easier to patch all gms if you're not playin online den to accidentally run your xbox into some mess like this unless you play online but that's just my personal opinion tho... but yea I did put old firmware back on so is that y I have no luck?

That's correct, although it also depends on the drive.
The reason for that is because dashboard version 2.0.13146.0 reflashes all Lite-On and BenQ drives with a new original firmware. For example, with fat Xbox consoles with Lite-On drives, there's various different types of Lite-On drives and each one used to have its own firmware. Now, all Lite-Ons in fat consoles that have been updated with dashboard 2.0.13146.0 or newer use firmware 02510C, so they're all the same now. If your drive has been flashed to 02510C, then having a backup of the old firmware from before then is no good, although you should still keep it as it has your key in it.
In your case, as you have a BenQ, you need to know which dashboard version you're on. That could be a problem, as the dashboard update failed, so you don't know if your drive has been reflashed or not. You may need to use the old original BenQ firmware. You may need to use the new BenQ original firmware (04421C). As your console is pretty much a brick right now, I would try both, unless someone can suggest a better solution for getting it back up and running. You can download both the old and new stock BenQ firmware from the web, so it's not a problem as long as you have the drive key.

Revert to orig.bin, update dashboard via usb, then reflash to Ixtreme 1.91? Will that work?
Yep. If you flash back to stock, update the dashboard either via Live or via the downloadable version of the update from Xbox.com, then flash back to LT+ 1.91 you'll be OK. It's people that are trying to update without flashing back to stock first that are having the problem with either getting stuck in a failed update loop or getting other errors.
Ah thanks for the answer. So it only checks firmware while updating? It wont check it every now and then?
Also, if I want to play a wave 12 game on, do I need to patch the game with the video file for wave 12 from abgx - or do I need to patch it with an earlier wave, say 11 or 10?
Thanks

As far as i've been told, at the moment it is impossible to play a game that requires the update (ie rugby) without actually doing the dashboard update. Manipulating the wave also wont help - you have to do the update and the safe way to do it is to revert to stock first, then update, then reflash to 1.91 (which will support wave 12).
If you have a slim xbox, updating with modded firmware will lock your console and you'll need to get it unlocked by Microsoft. Older 'fatter' xbox's will revert to original firmware but you should be able to re-flash - but no guarantee's.
Just what i've heard thus far

Have you tried formatting your hdd on your pc?

I wouldn't do that. If you format a 360 hard drive on a PC it'll just screw it up so it doesn't work on the 360 and you'll lose all of your game saves. If the 360 won't boot when the hard drive isn't even connected, then it can't be that anyway.

just wanted to give you all an update.. both xboxes had failed update screen. I was tryin to play madden 12. with the 1st xbox I put new stock firmware on & I was still stuck at update screen. I put original copy of madden 12 in the console & it went right thru the update with no issues. I did dash update via usb flash drive. I put lt 1.9 on there. xbox works like a charm. the 2nd xbox: when I put original madden 12 in that one it automatically updated firmware to the drive but removed ixtreme firmware I had on it. so I did dash update, den I put lt 1.9 on this one as well (& don't forget to inject/manual spoof the right dvd key) and it works like a charm.. so thanks to all that help me thru all the probs... so I'm assuming if anyone is stuck at update screen, get original copy of game & it should put you back on dashboard...

Also wanted to give an update as well. Was running LT+1.1 on a banned fat console on the 2.0.12625.0 dash. Went ahead and flashed back to my original firmware that came with the console, updated dash to 2.0.13599.0, and then flashed to LT+1.91, and it works like a charm. Thanks funk for your help.
One last question, it is safe to assume that going forward, all LT updates will require us to flash back to stock first?

Did you let the screen sit for awhile at the stop in the update? What happened to me was I did the update without checking online first, bad choice lol. But it stopped about halfway so I was like crap, restart system and doesn't go to dash and does update thing again. Downloaded the official systemupdate and tossed it on a flash drive and popped it in and did same thing. Then I just left it hanging there while I browsed some forums to troubleshoot and while I was browsing the system update finished. It was probably sitting at the hanging point for a good 5 mins give or take a few mins. I was updating from ixtreme 1.4 btw lol. Since it happened I flashed to LT+ 1.91 and all is well.

I've been looking this new wave 12 - 13 stuff up and I have a few questions. First of all, If i haven't updated the dashboard and i update to 1.9 and play a wave 12 game will I have to reflash?
Is it Possible to mod the ISO's to wave 11, or even wave 2 like back in the day?
And is it really true or is the hearsay, 1.6 will be lost if you play a wave 12 game??
If there is any additional information i should know, i greatly appreiciate it!
