I have had the original xbox for a long time, but never had a 360. I am thinking of getting one of the new slimmer sleek looking 360's and I had a few questions.

Can it be modded ? Is a chip required, or can it be softmodded ?

I use my xbox and xbmc to stream movies and music. How does the xbox 360 compare for streaming ? Does it support most of the common formats like xvid etc ?

Any other info that would help me decide if I should get a 360 would be helpful.

Regards,
KP

You will be wanting to get a JTAGGED Xbox if you want a mod like the original xbox, in which case you'll need to get a 360 which still has the blades dashboard or one that has already been jtagged. For the former (if you want to do the mod yourself) look on either here, ebay or anywhere that sells second hand Xbox 360's (I doubt there is a brand new box out there that hasn't been pre-updated). For the latter look on AfterDawn's selling section and if you live in the UK miketrev can set you up. There are plenty of tutorials about the jtag mod if you fancy doing it yourself. I don't know about your other questions, I'm new to all this, but search around and I'm sure you'll find your answers.

It doesn't need to have the blades dashboard. Whether it's blades or NXE, it just needs to be at dashboard version 7371 or lower to be JTAGged (although a blades dash is guaranteed to be JTAG-able).

So I'm guessing that the new slim shiny xbox 360 will not be "mod" able.
Could I at least do something with the drive so that it can read backups ?

It's not JTAGable because the dashboard is too new. But I'm guessing that the drive will be will be flashable within a few months or so, just like the previous 7 or so drives have been.
