So,
I just got the new xtractor 2 and vampire, however, my computer crashed and I had to restore the hard drive before I even got to use the setup. I used HD regenerator and I decided to execute the lengthy routine, so I would save most of my data, but it takes all day to run.
I had 2 elite consoles with 93450c drives that needed flashing so I took them to another local modder. He was able to flash one of the drives successfully but had no luck getting good flash properties on the second drive. I decided to leave the console with him while I went and took care of other things.
He called me later on to say that he could not dump the firmware and that the console was experiencing problems booting with the drive connected. Sure enough, no video when the drive is connected but as soon as you remove it boots fine to the dash. The drive is capable of ejecting when plugged in, laser works, motor spins up....but NO VIDEO.
Anyone ever hear of anything like this? I checked the traces and the all seem to be bridged properly. Anyone have any suggestions?
"All drives should be updated to Lite Touch + (LT+) firmware if playing on XBOX live. Samsung drives and pre-78/79 Hitachi drives do not utilize AP 2.5. All other drives are considered to be detectable by Microsoft (YMMV). Make sure all rips are ABGX verified, contain SSv2, and patched AP2.5 (where needed). XGD3 must currently be burned on new drive with PC Burner Max firmware for 100% rip. All modded consoles can be potentially unsafe for use on XBOX live."
That happens when the PCB is having short issues. Did it boot properly before you dropped it off? Check everything with a multimeter and confirm it's good. Sometimes a solder joint will short to the board. I'd personally try and dump the firmware yourself unless he's a pro. I've never seen one I couldn't dump, unless that guy plugged in the power up side down.
It was fine when I dropped it off, was playing regular games no problem. Console is from December 09. He is a good modder, I saw him work, but didn't get to see what he did while I was gone. He attempted to dump the drive (using proper tools, ck3, dual probe that he made himself) and like I said, got one of the drives to work fine but the other one is currently in a coma.
I've been modding 360s for about a year now and have gone through a couple hundred fixes. I'm pretty good myself.
I brought the console home and rebridged the traces and visually checked the PCB with an eye loope. Everything looks like it should be working fine. There has to be a short somewhere as you suggested, I just can't seem to see one.
I tried getting good flash properties, but came up with the same results using dosflash and jungleflasher. Jungleflasher always makes these drives hang for me, so I resort to dosflash most of the time.
Well, any brave souls out there that would like to take a stab at this? I'm in Southern California, so if you're in the US, let me know if you think you might be able to help me out.

Do you have a multimeter with a continuity tester? Then you could no for sure if you have a short or not...probe where you think it is and the other probe to ground and if it beeps you've found your short
btw I also had a harddrive crash recently that I'm having troubles even getting the OS to boot when it's connected. It'll start but it takes like 10 times as long. Tried using a couple of tools from a reputable torrent site but they both hang when they access the drive. Was that HD regenerator able to recover all of your data?

Yeah w00ly, search for "hiren's boot disk," a disk that works in dos. It has a multitude of hard drive utilities on it, as well as a billion other utilities for different PC troubleshooting tasks ...I've used HDD regenerator a few times and been successful in recovering most if not all of my data. It uses a special algorithm to not only scan but fix bad sectors on the surface of the drive. You can read about how it works on the programmer's site link. Highly recommend it...has saved me from a lot of headaches.
I've used a multimeter as per my problem...but not sure exactly where to start checking (besides the reworked traces). I'll continue to try different things and update this thread.
