I accidently plugged my drive's power cord in reversed.....fail....booooooom...burning smell...end of story. But I have no idea how to get the drive key off the drive now since it won't even go on. Any ideas how I can unpaperweight my 360? I believe the pcb with the key is the one with the power input...aka the fried pcb.

Can you post a pic of the PCB? If you didn't fry the flash chip you might be able to get it desoldered and read externally. If that is fried, you'll need to purchase a new XBOX 360.

Much sympathy, bud. I've done the same damn thing before...to my friends Xbox... while he was watching. That was an amusing conversation. Luckily, I had already gotten the drive key.

Good luck. You will definitely need to send the PCB to somebody who knows what they're doing.

wtf why would microsoft design something so stupid. I was doing it in the dark and i couldnt tell. The pcb is perfect..it looks like there is a glueish substance on it. I am on vacation right now and i cant take a picture as its at home. Nothing looks burnt, but it smells burnt. How do you desolder a chip like that?

I think that as long as you get the PCB itself out, you can just send it to somebody like that, without removing the chip. Then the pro can desolder the chip. Desoldering is do-able, but it is a PITA. You basically just use a soldering iron and a little hand-held vacuum pump and heat up the solder and then suck it away with the pump. It pretty much sucks.

I do agree that the design of the power cable is one of the worst power cable designs I've ever seen.

So the 360 does not even detect the drive. (flashing green light) it doesn't power up. What pcb is the drive key located on?

Yeah, it's focked, sorry to say.

I am not 100% sure on this, but I think there is only 1 PCB on the DVD drive. Just take it off and send it in to a pro.

Then you still need to get a new DVD drive, hopefully of the same model, and reflash that drive with your previous key.

It is a pain, but it's actually not that expensive, I think. A new drive is only like $40. I am not sure, but I don't think that key recovery service is too expensive, either. Maybe $20? So you may be able to break even.
Good luck.

You can do it that way, too. I have programmed other types of EEPROMs before and it's not bad, but I can't speak to this particular endeavor.

Well screw that why dont they just add a self destruct sequence so as soon as you turn the first t10 screw counter-clockwise once the whole console blows up in your face.

Actually, Microsoft already has something similar to that. Just won't harm you physically. XBOX 360 Suicide Command

Just on a side note. I always take a permanent marker and put a dot on top of the power plug so I know I am plugging it in correctly.
