TS-H943 Open Tray/Unreadable Disc

XBox is modded to have iXtreme 1.61 on TS-H943 drive. The drive is a piece, not wanting to open or close properly all of the time.

My situation is this... Modded games DO work in my box, but NOT all the time. 100% sure it's not a bad burn. The games work fine in other modded boxes.

When I go to boot a back up game (Red Dead Redemption is my example), I have one of two things happen when it doesn't work.
1) Says "READING" and then after a little while will say "OPEN TRAY"
2) Says "READING" and then after a little while will say "PLAY GAME". When loading the game, it goes to a black screen, waits for a bit, then I get the "UNREADABLE DISC ERROR".

When it does work, it will say "READING" and then eventually tell me that it's Red Dead Redemption and all that jazz.

Something to note is Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and the latest XBox Live Arcade disc (original discs) do not work. I put them in and my box will read them as a DVD saying "PLAY DVD". This isn't a big deal for me as I have two working XBox. I thought I'd share this information in the case it's relevant to finding a solution.

In the end, I'm thinking my problem is 1) bad/improper flash or 2) bad disc drive.

But I'm wondering if anybody could help me out with this and make it so every time I put my burned Red Dead Redemption, it will say "Play Game" then switch to say "Play RED DEAD REDEMPTION" and actually work (and not give UNREADABLE DISC or OPEN TRAY issues).

bad burns doesnt matter if you say they work,or bad laser

If the laser is fucked on it, I doubt I'd be able to easily play any original disc game, let alone detect the games as a game but just not be able to read them.

EDIT:
So upon further investigation, it appears that even my originals don't want to work in the XBox ("Open Tray" problem there). I inspected the laser, put some rubber padding in to make sure that the laser just isn't moving too close to the center. It appears that isn't the problem either.

I have cleaned the laser in the drive as well. I'm gonna take a guess and say my laser is dead but I'm wondering if there's a way to find out for sure if that's the actual problem.
