Hey, I just came back from a short operational deployment to find that my 360 is making a weird sound when it boots up. The sound is like a medium-pitched nasal sound, kind of like a strained motor. It only lasts about 15 seconds and it doesn't occur when I start the xbox with the eject button nor when it is laying horizontal. Which leads me to believe that it has something to do with optical drive. The noise in tolerable but I fear that it is an early sign of the rrod, but it's a jasper chipset so I doubt it.
The xbox is out of warranty, but I should be able to fix it if I know what to do. I was gone for 18 days so maybe the xbox is just clogged with dust.

Yeah sounds like your DVD drive. If you want a new one you could extract the DVD key from it and put it into a new one.
