Usb/rs232 cable for maximus 360xtractor??

Ok I have read a bunch of tutorials, and threads on how to flash different drives etc. But what I can't seem to understand is what the Usb cable, or Rs232 cable would be used for. I have a maximus 360xtractor pro, and vampire kit. I know the sata gets plugged in, along with the vampire to extract, but does the usb cable need to be plugged in?

-I have a lite on drive i am going to flash, and none of the lite on tutorials say you need it plugged in.

Also what would be the case where I would need to use this cable? specific drives, or flashing method?
