hi,being an old duffer I did a stupid thing and put a 64 gig stick on my recently aquired 360,needless to say it was only after that I realised it was only recognising 8gig,now I can't reformat the stick back up to 64 gig.
could someone please give mean idea how to do this.

If there's nothing on it you want to keep, you can just connect it to a PC and format it.
