i am about to mod my xbox360 , i have all the components to do so.....the xbox is a liton drive unit (refurbished from *icrosoft).

i have spare broken xbox360 that does not a have a liton drive.....

i will have to read the new drive to get the keys....can i write them to the non-liton drive and use it in the xbox? keeping the new original in tact....

You can dump the key and spoof it to that other drive to test it out. If it works, the key is good. You could leave it like that but if you get on XBOX Live, it is recommended to go ahead and flash the Lite-ON.

what would be your reason for not using the liteon? Overall, I think it's a better drive anyways.

i thought i could leave the liton in tact...if there were any problem with the whole unit...i could stick it back in for warranty purposes....i guess you just reflash the drive back to the original read and it is back to normal.....not too sure. lil more reading i guess

There isn't original firmware available for Lite-ONs. So once it is flashed to iXtreme, it stays iXtreme.
