Vinyl paint for xbox 360 controller

Okay I went for a trip down to the paint store to buy some vinyl dye to paint/dye my controller red. But they were out of red plasticolor vinyl dye so I bought a satin red can of MotoSpray Vinyl paint (i thought it was vinyl dye). So I got home to test it out on the inside of the controller, I washed it and lightly sanded it but I was out of Isocol so no chemical prep was done. I did about 2 swipes and let it dry for 20 mins. But after the recommended drying times the paint did not fuse into the controller like the plasticolor stuff, and I could scratch it off with my fingernails.

My question is should I buy the $15 a can Motospray surface prep spray or should I get a clearcoat to spray over the top. I have never needed to use a clear coat before so I am not sure how well it protects xbox 360 controllers.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Edit: Do you think the will accept a return? I've only used a bit.
