Although I've never personally fixed a RRoD box myself, I know HOW it's done. Since some products work better than others, what I want to know is what do you guys think are the best products to use (brands and/or sellers). I've got 3 RRoD JTAGable boxes I want to fix.

I am not sure about all the hoopla surrounding the RRod, but my laptop had Nvidia's BGA problem and was bricked. I did an oven reflow to fix it. When looking into this, I noticed that it was recommended for Xbox360 RROD. If so, I'd do a reflow before I would do a clamp or something. For my laptop, I used a standard oven and a separate digital thermometer. Bring to temp at 350 for four minutes, to 380 for four minutes, to 420 for four minutes and then 430 for two. Total reflow time for my profile was 14 minutes with a 30 minute cooldown. THEN re-thermal paste all of your sinks. I simply masked off all the board connectors and other chips with aluminum foil and an old towel. leave about 1/4" to 1/2" around the chip that needs the reflow. Set on some aluminum foil "balls" to suspend the board. Squirt some liquid flux under the edge of the chip in question. Preheat oven to 350, and start the reflow. Watch actual temps on a separate digital oven thermometer. And finally, ventilate well! I had through-the-kitchen air circulation so that nasty fumes kicked up by the heat (i.e. lead fumes) were sucked immediately out of the house.

rdhood, thanks for the input. I know HOW to fix it, I just wanna know what are the best materials (such as what BRAND of thermal paste, etc).

best thermal paste is artic silver 5. and if you do go with an oven reflow instead of sending it out for a reflow, make sure to pick up some liquid flux of ebay. keister 859 (i believe thats what it is, just check my reflow station thread and make sure) is the good stuff. that will ensure the best reflow possible.

It's Kester 951. It's great because it's a No-Clean (NC) liquid flux. I'd be careful with the amount you use under your components and make sure it stays away from the RAM chips...had some difficulties when this happened to me.

Aside from all the thermal paste hoopla, there's not too much of a difference between the top thermal compound brands in xbox 360 applications. Artic Silver works great. I've been using a really cheap but highly ranked Rosewill thermal compound called RCX-TC060 and it works as well if not better than artic silver in 360s for me. I got a big bottle of it for 10 bucks a while back when they ran a deal. I think it's 13 now w/shipping. It also has a 5 star rating.

Also, the key to thermal paste is to use less than a ridiculously thin amount on your components.

If you want an 80 thermal compound paste comparison with the highest performers listed here's a link you'll want to check out...as well as the findings on how to properly apply thermal paste to a chip.

"All drives should be updated to Lite Touch + (LT+) firmware if playing on XBOX live. Samsung drives and pre-78/79 Hitachi drives do not utilize AP 2.5. All other drives are considered to be detectable by Microsoft (YMMV). Make sure all rips are ABGX verified, contain SSv2, and patched AP2.5 (where needed). XGD3 must currently be burned on new drive with PC Burner Max firmware for 100% rip. All modded consoles can be potentially unsafe for use on XBOX live."

Thanks for the input guys. I picked up some Arctic Silver 5 from Radio Shack. It did the job. Ran the console about 24 hrs straight and it seems fine now.

Thanks again.

I just fixed my rrod. I used Arctic Silver ceramique. I used it in my computer without problems so thought I might as well get the same thing for my 360. I've only played it for 30 mins. since I fixed it though but so far it seems fine.

i would reflow with a heatgun FAR before putting the whole MB in the oven. You can direct the heat to one specific area (GPU, CPU, Southbridge, H/ana, ram chips) instead of the whole board. You would need your oven to get to 420*F to reflow the solder which means you heat the whole board to 400+ which im sure will damage other components (plastic on the usb/av/power ports.ect) i would try heatgun and protect the other components with tinfoil except the parts mentioned above.

who said anything about doing an oven reflow?? if you have read any of the reflow threads on here that infamous and myself are in, you would see that we are using real reflow stations, not some stupid heat gun that you cannot control the real temperature of or an oven.

edit-
nm...just saw the dude that stated he used an oven... i still wouldnt waste my time with a heat gun though. and his temps are wayyyyyyyyyyyyy to high anyways, yet another reason to not do what he did.

true many people dont have $150+ for a reflow station and the heatgun is certainly better alternative to the oven. I have an e74 xenon fixed with heatgun (using flux/isolating other components) thats been up and running for over a year with near daily use (CoD,gta4,l4d) stock x,clamps, no fan/shroud mods, stock gpu heatsink. couldnt be happier

oh i know not all people can afford or have a purpose of buying a reflow station. but with a heat gun, you dont really know if the temperature is 150, 175, 200, 250 degrees. only way to know that is to use a thermometer to determine what it is, but by the time you spend all the money on the heat gun, thermo, flux, new thermal paste, might as well have sent it out to get reflowed.

First to hooterjh: WRONG WRONG WRONG. You haven't done a reflow, and you have no idea what you are talking about. Plastic parts can be appropriately shielded and will not melt off in a 14 minute reflow. The oven reflow is better because 1) the chip is more evenly heated and 2) the temperatures can be more tightly controlled than with a heat gun.

Secdond to wabashman: I got my temps from a document on commercial reflow ovens. The temps were NOT wayyyyyyyyy to high. The only problem with what I did was that I could not do the provide in 4.5 minutes because my oven would not go through the profile as quickly as a commercial reflow oven. By all means, put "reflow profile" into Google and have at it. I didn't just pull numbers out of my azz.

trust me, ive spent countless hours of researching, experimenting, and questions reflow profiles in the last few months. also, if your temps were stated in F, then i apologize for stating you went to high. just 9/10 times temps are stated in C. and if they were in C then it would be way to high since lead-free solder melts at 217C.

I stated temps in Fahrenheit because most ovens in the U.S. are graduated in Fahrenheit.
My reflow seems to have gone well... my laptop is still quite alive 8 weeks later. Really, it is the best (and cheapest!) you can do at home without a dedicated reflow oven or reflow station.
