What is the easiest way to flash a 360 to play backups?
If I bought a new unit whats the easiest way to get it to play backups?

Coming over to the dark side, eh? :)
It's going to be a tough call if you buy a new one. You may actually end up with a new version of the Lite On drive which can't be flashed yet.
I'd say your best bet is to use 360drives.com to help you find a good team and lot number.
After that, using Jungle Flasher is the most popular method. www.jungleflasher.net You may also have to invest in a sata card.

What new version of the lite on cant be flashed? I only know of 2 versions of the lite on, and they can both be flashed. What version are u talkin about?

im a total noob when it comes to modding a xbox 360 and im about to order one from amazon this week i been reading alot for the past month i had no idea that there was a new Lite on drive that couldn't be flashed thanks for the post

Well I hate the 360 but ti has games but good lord they aint worth the investment so I need to manage things strictly I don't care about live :P
But if I got a flashable drive and pop'd it in the new 360 unit would that not get it working?

Yeah, it's taking forever, but MS is slowly getting their $hit together in regards to the hardware failure.
As for just popping in a flashable drive, the way the 360 works is the drive is "married" to the mobo via key. It is possible to swap drives, but you need to at least be able to read the key from the original drive.
If you're looking to buy new, I'm sure there is still plenty of flashable stock available at the retailers. I just wanted to make you aware that there is also some new drives out there that the team is still working on firmware for.

you can look at the lot numbers on the case, and then the manu date on the console itself, and sort of narrow it down, but no definitive way of stating yes/no on it. if its made before august of this year, it 'should' be flashable. if its later then that, prob wont be. other than that, the only way to tell if its flashable or not is to open the console up and see which revision of the drive it is.

Yes, on the outside of the box that the 360 comes in, there's a sticker with the team # and lot #, and then there's a little flap you can fold in. The cashiers use it to scan the bar code on the console. Fold it in and you'll see the mfr. date.
With the lot, team, and mfr. date you can compare it to that site I gave you, www.360drives.com .

As far as build wise goes how far dose the "newest" build go back? whats the lastest CPU/gpu in them? I can save 100$ going used then flashing it.

you should be safe regarding sustainability, non-breaking stuff as long as you buy last fall or later consoles. i have one i bought 2 x-mases ago, and its still going strong. it has the 2nd gen heat sync in it just like the new ones do, only difference is it uses the 175 watt psu, not the 150 watt. but im fairly sure the new ones came out around this time last year.

yea, they must be opened. and dont waste your money on the blaster. 3 years ago when new FW was coming out every 3 months, it would have been worthwhile. but now-a-days its pointless. unless you're going to use your consoles drive to rip games, but its easier to either dl them, or buy a samsung PC drive with kreon FW on it. where are you located? as i will have a preflashed unit available in a few days if your interested in it.

TN in the states, but I not really ready to fool with it yet, I really need to get a new monitor with HDMI input before I get a 360 ><

I don;t mind take a 360 apart I mean I have done so with the PS2 and Xbox and have replaced a bad PSU in a friends 360, its just the fail rate has left me stone cold. If I get one I had my mind made up tog et a new one with a extra warranty on it but hell anything I do on it is going to cost so I might as well take the cheapest way out and plan on fixing it when it goes down.

its not so bad right now. kinda warm. was cold this morning though. however, i havent had any consoles RROD on me. im on my second one though, and thats only because my first one was banned. and i leave it on 24/7.
