It bypasses AP2.5 protection. If you don't have the proper AP2.5 files (extra challenges that your friendly neighbor M$ is requesting) written to your backup, then instead of getting a disc unreadable error, you get a black screen for about 3 minutes. That is a 3 minute window to eject the non-AP2.5 image so your xbox doesn't get flagged for a ban. Always run your .iso through ABGX. ABGX will patch the .iso with any AP2.5 challenges that are available at the time for that particular game. If you get the disc unreadable error, you might want to download xval 2.0 and make sure that your secdata is clean(console is not flagged). If you see anything about Failing an AP2.5 challenge, then you're console is marked for death when the ban hammer hits, unless you never intend on playing on live again. I believe it also corrupts your profile, so you can't play with your gamertag on a legit console unless you recover it from live with the legit console or non-flagged console. LT for samsung is perfectly fine AFAIK and already defeats AP2.5, because the drive is incapable of reading AP2.5 challenges. Most of the older Hitachi drives are the same way. To be safe, if you have a Hitachi, I would update it to LT+ 1.1 just to be safe.
