I rescued my old RROD'd Xbox and decided to play around with modding it. Exactly what are the differences between the older and newer firmwares? It took a while to get any firmware on mine at all (at one point I thought I'd bricked it) so I feel loathed to change it, especially since it's played everything I've thrown at it. I'm using Maximus-Garyopa 2.3 rev2 on a Hitachi 47. I don't ever play online. Is the only difference between this and newer firmwares the chance of being banned from Live?

I'm not too familiar with the pre-iXtreme firmwares but I know the earlier iXtremes wouldn't let you boot newer wave games. However I think that was a "feature" that was added to iXtreme. If you're able to play newer wave games and you dont go on XBL then I wouldn't worry about upgrading it. Hitachis especially can be a pain (as you've seen) with potential bricks.
