So I was having the, "This Disc is Unreadable" error, whatever it's called.
Anyway, I replaced the DVD drive, put a my PCB in a new DVD drive, and I'm still getting the same error.. Can anyone give me some idea of what to do? Thanks.

Does it do this with more than one disk? Originals and back ups?

Try to reseat the ribbon cable going to the laser -- you did have to remove and reseat that when you changed the board, right?
Is it the same drive replacement? What kind?

Yeah, I did that, I guess I may do it again? I hate ribbon cables with a passion because they never go in to place too easy.
And yeah, it's the same kind. Hitachi GDR 3120L. The only difference is the serial number, and manufacture date.
I heard from a guy at a game store that I needed to reset the console, from what I've seen I need to go to the System info tab in the console settings, and press a bunch of random buttons to get a menu pop up that will let me reset it. I have a Halo 3 Edition Xbox 360, can you tell me what the code for that would be?
Thanks, I really appreciate the help!

I don't know about having to reset it. If you are replacing with the same DVD, and swapping out the DVD board -- the Board has all of the data on it -- as far as the key, etc.

How did this happen with the 360 getting disk unreadable errors? All of a sudden, everything was unreadable?

You can always try and do the pot adjust -- but if it doesn't read any disks, then I doubt that it will help. Did yours slowly get worse and worse? With some disks working and others not? I mean, the original drive...

Go to the System
Select Memory
Press Y on the HD symbol
Press X,X, Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X,X
A message: Do you want to perform maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage devices? will appear
Select Yes
Thats the sequence you are asking about. I dont think it will do anything for you though. It is to reset the storage devices. I dont think it does anything for the dvd drive or the complete system.

Thanks Whompus, I may give it a try just to for the heck of it, not like it can hurt anything eh?
And Thosmos, it was like that when I received it. It just didn't work, but even after I replaced the DVD drive it's still effin' up on me.

I can't remember if the hitachi's have them or not but check to see if your laser assembly has a switch on it to let it know when it has reach center point. It's a very small spring switch that you can push. Play around with the zero point to see if that will help you by placing a piece of tape or something thin where that switch touches and see if that helps. You can also adjust the DVD motor angle (you'll see two screws with springs under them) adjusting this may help also. I hope this helps you. Good luck.

Your laser is either dirty or going/gone bad on it. Try to calibrate the pot and the DVD motor angle. Always make it a point to mark where the original settings for these were at. If that doesn't work, especially the pot adjustment, then your best bet is to get a completely different drive and flash it as your hitachi.

If the last 2 advices don't work for you and this is a brand new drive giving you problems, I'm gonna have to guess you messed up the ribbon cable that goes to the laser when switching out your PCBs. Grab the cable from the old drive & cross your fingers.

I noticed that I hadn't totally seated the ribbon cable right on my PCB, but the weird thing is it won't go in totally. So I'm gonna grab the old one and try to put that ribbon cable in and seat it instead.
Thanks guys.

I give up, I reseated the ribbon cable and it just got worst. It won't even read games now, it just makes this noise like it's spinning and a bit of a grinding noise, then it won't even say the name of the game, or let me start it anymore..

Hopefully that's what it is. Sounds like it could be.

Does the laser actually light up? Connect to PC with the case off the drive and power up. does the laser light up? If not, it's not connected properly. It would have been easier to just dump the FW and spoof to the new drive.

No, there's no resetting the 360 that's going to help with the dvd drive. Bought it from eBay... sounds like the previous owner tried fixing the drive himself first. Chances are good he had the disc read error, threw in a new drive without knowing that it's necessary to swap the boards or flash the keys, still had the same error, and sold it.
