basically you open the drive casing and look near the laser and there's tiny screws on a small PCB. The one on the left is your DVD laser. Measure the resistance across the two small points and it'll come out to around ~4.0k. Slowly drop the resistance with TINY turns (about .250 to .500 at a time) and try it. When it starts working again then stop because you dont want to drop it too low. I wouldnt go below 3.2k. Do not attempt if you dont have a multimeter that can measure 20k ohms!

Thanks for the tip, that was easy. Unfortunatly, it did not solve my problem. I believe the next step is to replace the DVD drive. I have heard the Phillips units are not that reliable. I believe Samsung is one of the favorites. Would I be able to swap a different brand, and in your opinion, would I be better off?

Actually I've had 4 benqs (2 banned and 2 new ones :) and they've all been pretty good reading my games (even though I use memorex on 6x). I'd go ahead and get another benq. Besides when LT comes out for the benq you wont be able to spoof to another brand anyway so might as well go with the same brand now
