my son has a xbox 360 and his hard drive was perfect, he then took it to his friends house and suddenly it stopped working, someone told him it was fried.....how do i find out the serial number or something to tell me that his friend didn't switch it, something to match up my son's console with the drive..........

from what i know there is no way to tell if it belongs to him unless you jotted the serial number before his friend may have switched it
you could always check to see if the harddrive has been opened or tampered with by a square silver seal of warranty on the bottom edge of the hdd (the side that plugs into the 360) if it isnt there then its been opened
however if the seal is still in tact id take it back to the store you baught it from or send it to microsoft for a replacement

what is the exact problem? If the drive is not recognized when its attached, and plugged in, then try to turn the xbox on without it, then plug it in while the system is on... this will cause the system to reboot, and hopefully will recognize the drive.

What first came to my mind when I read your post was that your son's friends xbox might be a banned system. Your son's system may NOT be banned. But when the HDD was connected to your friends system (so it went from a NON banned system, to a banned system) it continued to save to the drive as normal... However when your son reconnected back to his system, those saves/files that his friends system saved to it are are only readable by the banned system, your NON BANNED system will NOT read it properly, and it will show the file as being corrupt. Your son will have to log into Xbox live, and recover his profile from Xbox Live... once he does that the drive will erase all of the corrupt data that his friends xbox stored on it, and should return it back to normal.
