Basically, my flashed xbox will read discs fine a couple of times, and then suddenly get an open tray error. at that point, i have to keep opening and closing the drive and hope for the best, or take apart my xbox and manually reset my laser. is there anyway to permenantly fix the problem? would replacing the xbox laser help at all? if it would, can you guys point me to the right direction for quality lasers (dont want it screwing up on me again :p)

i found some really cheap ones here

http://myworld.ebay.com/gadgetfix

has anyone ever bought from them? are they good quality

thanks for all the help

what drive do you have?

I have a liteon 7 series that does this faithfully and has kept doing it on all firmwares. my lens needs a cleaning i have yet to do it becasue it only boots me from playing every once in a while but always reads.. make sure you clean under the lens to if you go this route, as just wiping top lens is not always enough.

If not replace lens and the seller you listed is good ive bought items from them before.

if you are saying that your laser is getting stuck in the back, then no a laser replacement will not help your problem, i have seen one guy that put a couple of washers at the end of the rail to stop it from going that far back, but you will have to put it exactly to avoid other problems. the easiest way is to replace the drive.

I have a liteon drive as well

@co45 The xbox has never booted me from playing (as of now), but sometimes refuses to start up the game. I kinda cleaned the rails of the laser with contact lens solution and cotton swabs, which somewhat alleviated the problem, but it still happens. So your saying I would need to clean the entire laser?

@peluynati Yes, my laser gets stuck in the back every so aften and refuses to read games until it is manually pushed forward. Do you know exactly where to place the washers?

Also would lubricating the rails/spindle help at all? I noticed that laser doesnt slide smoothly across the rails. If it would, what lube do you guys reccomend? Would WD-40 suffice?

Thank you all!

I have fixed the laser issue with a 1mm washer when it gets stuck in the back. Just super glue it to the back bracket where the laser slides to. Works every time!

I use packing grease for my dirtbikes works great on the rails.
and i dont know why i wasnt thinking when replying back but if you lens gets stuck that would be causing your open tray error. I myself have never had a lens sticking, only open trays and read errors caused by dirty lens.

and what drive do you have? I can upload a photo of where im talking about cleaning on the lens.

Doesn't matter what drive he has. I've seen this happen more on liteon drives. A new laser will not fix it. It has to do with the metal bracket in the back getting wore out. Just paste the spacer I mentioned and it will work.

Is this washer fix the same as what they call the rubber band trick? or are they different things?

once again riding my dick and not reading i clearly said it is not the cause of a dirty lens. Learn to read and i just added the cleaning info if he was interested in cleaning his lens the whole way! but i guess im wrong some where in there too!!

Then go back and ready my post. My fix is NOT for a dirty lens you MORON! This fixes the laser placement issue. Go back to NOOB school. If the laser sticks in the back, it won't read games.

It does on the rail where the white piece is connected to the laser. Make sure you have it lined up and make sure it's plastic.

@ModQueen30
Does this NOOB school teach you how to read or did you fail at that too?

your arguing that you said it wasnt a dirty lens problem.... SO DID I!!!!!

use the little tab on right hand side of the screen and scroll up and read!

ah that might be the problem. i used a metal washer instead of a plastic one. is it really very important?

also, do you guys think the rubber band trick would still work?

show me a picture. you have to install the washer and power cycle the drive several times to make sure it's working.

I bent the metal part forward instead of putting a washer in, works fine now.The one I had was a Benq - same problem though. To establish if the laser alignment was the problem I removed the lid from the drive and fitted the screws back in, I kept sliding the laser to it's futhest point the edge of disk and restarted the xbox with the disk in and also tried ejecting and inserting a disk it would not read the disk and displayed open tray. If I slid the laser back to the centre of disk the drive would read every time.
