Long story short, my xbox dvd drive got fried while playing a backup game. The drive would not open and the power sign would keep on flashing green. I asked someone for help and they said I needed a replacement drive. My question is what caused the dvd drive to burn out in the first place? Its hooked up to a surge protector with a lot of other appliances connected to it. Theres even a surge protector hooked onto that surge protector with even more appliances. Could this be the issue? Do I need to find a outlet dedicated solely to my xbox? Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks

drives do not just fry playing a game, i would bet money that if it is fried when it was flashed was traces cut? if so is the connections still in tact? was the screws put back in the drive board? i have seen one that the screws were not put back in and it fell out and shorted on the casing.

Any power spikes or brown outs would cause the Xbox damage over the DVD drive. The DVD drive is to far down the power path to take a hit with out damaging the Xbox too.
Was this one just modded?

Some bad advice there deepc266, if your not sure then do not answer as if he would of followed your advise he would of wasted $20-£30. Its not the laser as he would get the Open Tray / Play DVD / DVD unreadablee error. The middle light flashing constantly means that the xbox is not picking up the DVD attached to it.
@OP - Fingers crossed you have a copy of your firmware, if so I would be inclined to test another drive spoofed with your firmware and take it from there.
It does sound unlikely this happened when just playing a game, however its not totally impossible that a peice of electronics suddenly developed a fault.
Good luck and lt us know if you need more help.

Thats why i asked if it was just modded.... ya'll are too quick to be smart asses over here to even try to be nice and work the issues out. again thats why i asked if it had just been modded. Last time i saw this the person left a cable off the logic board. but i didn't want to give bad advise.....

Im not nit picking, maybe if you had said "Has it been modded? Could of it been damaged in the process of modding" then it would of been a different story. This comment - "I would just replace the laser in it." would not help this type of issue in any way.
Anyway, I'm not trying to be a dick here, just maybe in future if your not sure just say.

I was quick to tell the OP the advice given was incorrect incase he read your advise as gospel and bought a new laser based on this. I was just trying to prevent this from happening.
I appriciate you are trying to help here, but your whole attitude is wrong. Instead of "My bad, thanks for the correct" I get called a Smart Ass. End of the day, you gave incorrect advise, I corrected you and I am now a "Smart Ass" for correcting you?

Sorry I was extremely busy over the past few days so I didn't get a chance to see all these replies. The xbox was modded about a week before the drive stopped working and the person who modded it for me had to cut the traces in order to get the files he needed. Unfortunately I dont think I have the original firmware but when i called the guy who flashed it for me, he said that if I brought him a new drive, he could flash it and install it for me for free, so I'm assuming he has the firmware. The obvious conclusion I have come to from the present situation is that the mod has somehow caused my dvd drive to stop working, but I cant figure out how or why.
What exactly happened was that when I was playing a game, the screen froze, turned black and then my xbox restarted. It went directly to the dashboard where it then didn't recognize the game in the dvd drive and wouldn't open either. Therefore, I'm assumed it got fried when I was playing the game, but I'm not exactly sure what had happened. Again, any thoughts on this issue will be appreciated.
On a side note I just wanted to thank the people that commented and tried to help me out.

Yea.. sorry i caused problems the first time. it was a bad day all around for me. I got side tracked and pissed all the same time. I even ended up with a stomach virus that day. go figure.
Can you open it your self? it would be nice to be able to see what type of job this person did and look over things.
i would think something has came loose or shorted out like peluynati mention. but with out opening it yourself your kind of that the modders mercery. He could have not plug in something good and it came loose, cut a trace to deep or not repaired the board good and cause it. It usally would show up right after modding it, but still don't think playing a game or electric spike would cause that. I would make sure to get the key from him ether way.
Im sure miketrev will correct me if wrong :) joking, don't hit me (:

Is the drive making any sort of noise when you try to eject .if its making any noise chances r u have a broken belt which i believe causes light to flash.
