i have an old 360 with rrod. ive tried to repair it myself via non towl method. i used the method of screws and washers found at

still have the rrod. My question: Would buying a replacement motherboard solve the problem?

Maybe my thinking is backwards or incorrect, but im looking for the best fix without buying a new one. this was given to me for free and id rather not toss it in the trash.

swapping the motherboard won't help as you won't get the correct DVD key from the motherboard to allow the system to play games.

Your best bet is to continue trying to fix this unit. Search for wooly's heatgun guide and try that... if your still getting rrod, then you've got broken solder joints under the GPU and/or CPU, so you need to try and fix that. Replacing the x-clamps with screws & washers is just a small part of a larger fix. Also ensure you've used a silver based (as opposed to a silicon based) thermal compound such as Artic Silver 5.

You can either get the mobo reballed which might be costly, or you can try wooly's heatgun which is cheap and easy and usually has very positive results.
