So last week i received this rrod xbox 360 that was sealed with 0102 as a secondary code. Figured i'd reflow cpu and gpu and all would be well. I 12v the transistor then reassembled the xbox. No lights at all, fans came on. I thought to myself this is odd, then i hear the audio from the xbox's splash screen. I turned my monitor to the vga input and sure enough audio and video works, just no ring of light or even a power light.

So i switched out the ring of light with one of the other ones i had and it didn't change anything. After trying 4 rol boards i figured the problem is either the cpu or southbridge. So i took it apart again and reflowed the southbridge, just for kicks i reflowed the cpu again. Same problem but now the controllers will sync. Though when you go to turn off the console the controller will still stay on and act like it's connected. You have to pull the battery from the controller then resync it every time you want to use it.

The motherboard is completely flat and has no warp at all to it, everything looks good and it had 3 red lights when it came in, i didnt' bother to look at the power button.

Anybody ever run into this problem? This is probably my 500th xbox and i've never seen anything like it.

It's hard to understand what you said there did you do the 12v fan mod?
Have you tried disconnecting that?
Maybe it could be the ram or the connector?
What motherboard is it?

Yes, the 12v transistor is the clean way to do the 12v fan mod. This was a falcon motherboard. I already had the customer come in to pick up the xbox. It's not the connector and ram doesn't control the ring of light board.

Take a look at this picture, you can see the southbridge should be the culprit.

12v modding the transistor wouldn't make any sense, that's just the fan bus and when the xbox overheats it supplies 12v to the fan bus anyway. Something got too hot, but i couldn't figure out what it was. I'm just trying to figure it out because i can't let electronics get the best of me.

Any other thoughts?

Hmm, that's interesting. If I was really going to figure it out, I would get pinouts of everything and test the circuits with a multimeter. If I was to go extreme, I would re-ball and even swap the south-bridge chip. If you've already returned it to the customer, I don't know what else you can do. Just curious, if you were to power down the console and completely unplug it, does the controller stay on?

yep it stays on then you have to pull the batteries then resync the controller. You can't turn the xbox on with the controller. It's awfully weird, i didn't try to pull the power to the xbox while the controller was still on. My guess would be that it would turn off. Remember you have 5v running to the xbox all the time. I'm guessing that the southbridge isn't doing it's job and isn't supplying enough power to the ring of light. The cutoff signal for the controllers might be supplied at higher voltage. Really who knows, i don't care to really get into the possibilities, i just want to know who's experienced a problem like this before.
