i bought it used and i hooked it up through the data cableand it had me trun it into a usb drive, so i thought ok i can change it later. now i want to use it as my main HDD and i put it where the HDD would go and it doesn't see it. but if i hook it up though the data cable it comes up as a usb drive and won't let me change it. how can i fix this and start using it as the main HDD again?

Is this an external drive? If so you cannot read 250. Beleive 16gb is the highest the dash will allow. If you have an internal drive, then you can go up to 250. Of course if you have a jtag, it can go as high as you want.

I think the part where he said he hooks it up to the hd port on the xbox tells you the answer to this. If you have anything you want on the drive then you can use the transfer cable to copy it to pc with xplorer, and after you've done that try to reformat it and start over.

is the hdd recognized in the ms dashboard (unformatted or unrecognized) or doesn't it show up at all? if it doesn't show up at all, check if the hddss.bin is on the hdd (sector 16), and see if that matches the hdd properties (it shows the serialnumber of the drive and the manufacturer). you can dump hddss.bin with xplorer, you can open it up with any hexeditor.
from what i gather he bought microsoft brand 360 hdd and hooked it up with the transfer cable. instead of using the transfer content feature he chose the option to create 360 storage on the drive(meant for external hard drives or flash drives only).
tbh i didn't even know that this was possible.
try hooking it up with the transfer cable and choose 'remove 360 storage' from the system menu. now try hooking it up again in the main hdd bay and see if it works, if not go into the system menu/memory and see if it will let you format the drive.
otherwise your gonna have to hook it to your pc and work on the hddss.bin like dennis said.
Just start over and reformat it. To transfer you can dump the old drive on your computer using xplorer 360. Then you need the 250GB version of xplorer 360 to transfer the data to the new drive. Or use Modio
You might have messed up the partitions. Make sure you are using the proper versions of xplorer. There is a different one per size drive.
