Xbox dvd drive problem

I trying to repair my friends xbox. When i put a disc in the drive it starts to play and then it ask for you to insert a xbox 360 game or something like that. when i open the box up to look at the dvd the manufacture dates of the xbox and dvd drive aren't the same what can i do? I would like to learn how to flash but i need the original dvd-key or do i??

They don't have to match.

Yes you do. Get the key and FLASH it to a new drive.
