I opened the box going to flash the drive. I power off both the xbox and pc. I then connect the sata cord from the box to my onboard in the pc. I plug in the pc and then go to plug in the xbox and as soon as the power cord touches the xbox in any way you here a pop and the gfci trips. The gfci will not reset until either the powere cord from either the box or pc is disconnected or one end of the sata is disconnected. Then the gfci is all good and my xbox will boot as usual. no apparent damage to either the box or pc thank god. I also have tried grounding the xbox to the chassis of the pc. If anyone can help I would be very thankful.

Take it off the gfi circuit its probably just at the breaking point and that extra amperage draw pops it. try it on a non gfi outlet.

Yeah I thought the same thing... But that was definitely something I should not have done... I plugged it into a regular receptical and and it still sparked except this time it damaged it.... I hooked the rom back up as normal except this time the lights on the xbox came on as usual except the center power light kept blinking. It booted up to the dashboard with no problems but about 30 seconds after it was turned on the rom began to smoke.I think its called the LPC board that inside of the dvd drive... Whatever that piece is called one of the chips on the board was definitely burnt up bad... So I have officially turned my box into nothing but a paperweight. From what I understand either you can swap that board to another rom or you can flash to another rom. Eaither way im pretty sure it is impossible to do.... I dont know how to add images on here otherwise I would show you what happened.
