xbox wont read discs

ok, been having major trouble with my xbox reading discs, it was the old 'open tray' error, eventually it would read them but it was pissing me off, so i attempted adjusting the pot on the dvd rom and i think i may have burnt out the laser, how can i tell if it is burnt out or not??

i foolishly looked on youtube , and i think i adjusted too far , i ve set back to its original position but now i dont think it is even trting to read the discs, although the reading in the original position, before i adjusted seems to be arounf 5.2k ohms?

i tried at 3.4 and 4 ohms but still no joy!

can anyone help? or do i need a new xbox

i have the philips liteon drive if thats any help
