From what I can see so far being revoked means that your console loses its “license to sign”. Data that is generated locally on your Xbox360 gets signed by a key unique to your Xbox360. This data includes Gamer Profiles and Saved Games. Being revoked does not mean that you can no longer sign this data, just that other Xbox360s will no longer recognise anything that your Xbox360 signs.

In short this means that if your console gets revoked you can no longer sign into a profile created on your Xbox360 on a friend’s Xbox360, nor can you use any gamesaves that were created on your Xbox360 on a friends Xbox360.

The part in bold is exactly what happens when you get banned now. The scary thing about revocation is, a list of all revoked consoles is stored in a data.bin file in the $SystemUpdate folder on game discs so that means that the effects of revocation can hit you even if you never go on Live again.

Here's a list of revoked consoles from the Fall 08 (NXE) update: -

There's only 433 consoles on that list, but will they update it to include consoles that have been banned in this ban wave? If they did, then potentially you could stay offline now to keep the hard drive install feature and avoid the profile/game saves corruption problem, but by doing a dashboard update from a future game disc, you would get hit anyway.

So u mean even if I buy a new xbox I can use my savefiles on my gamertag?

Microsoft: "Let them do it, let them do it..because come 4 quarter were going to pull their pants down and they better get ready for penatration, because we about to go IN"

No, I'm not saying that.

In the past there were bans (console and gamertag bans) and revocation which seems to have been reserved for more extreme offences that warranted action above and beyond a regular console/gamertag ban, but now it seems that revocation and banning are one and the same. A list of revoked consoles is stored in dashboard updates, so if they update that list with console IDs from this ban wave, then even if you stayed offline to avoid a ban which corrupts your profile/saves (when you try and use them on another machine) and removes the hard drive install feature, if your console is on the revocation list in the next dashboard update, you'd suffer those same consequences anyway.

Great find, funksoul!

Super interesting info there. However, I imagine that it is possible to recreate the systemupdate files to garbage info regarding banned consoles? Of course that wouldn't be a wise move for an unbanned person, but shouldn't affect a banned console as no more harm could be done. You would have to patch each game, but it'd be a small price to pay.

If that is possible, I wonder if this means it would be possible to edit that blacklist on a game we already have access to and then essentially unban our hard drive access.

Also, a silver lining of this fact: we can now see for ourselves some of the most closely guarded info about bannings out there -- how many people were banned between each dashboard update. Very useful info to have indeed, as it would be much more objective than our current method... or lack thereof.

$38 on new discs -- Check
$15 on burn after burn that showed as a DVD -- Check
$11 on new laser -- Check
$28 on new multimeter -- Check

There are some other interesting things on his blog, for example: -

I noticed the other day that when FIFA’09 for Xbox360 is patched with the latest update, the flags that specify what media the game is allowed to run from have changed. Originally it was allowed to boot from a standard original Xbox360 disc, however now it is only allowed to boot from a new media type which is basically an updated version of the original Xbox360 disc type.

Those who have ever looked into the depths of the Xbox360 disc authentication scheme know that a “new” type of disc authentication has been in the works since the Xbox360 was released. It is known as the AntiPiracy v2.5 checks, or AP2.5. Is this FIFA’09 patch a sign that AP2.5 is finally going to see the light of day? If so then the ban hammer is going to come down hard. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Read the rest HERE.

The creators of iXtreme are aware of this finding and have made mention of it in the text file of their 1.6 release.

"SS v2 suports multiple timing samples for challenges type 5 and 7 , stroing them in the SS. This is a pre-requiste for SS v3 which has support for the so called AP2.5 check. Since this has never been used or may never be used by MS we will adopt a wait and see approach and continue to monitor for its usage."

Hopefully, nothing becomes of AP2.5 ... BUT if it does apparently we are all sitting ducks. Oh sniz-zap!

I plan to mod my arcade unit and stay offline (no internet) from day one. How would MS finds out that I been playing backups even if I apply dashboard upgrades in the future?

Thanks,

They can't, unless a future dashboard update had that kind of functionality built into it. Currently, you can only be banned remotely, which means connecting to Live (or doing a Live connection test).
