Here's my question. I recently purchased a 1tb WD external HD to start backing up my blu ray collection to play on my PS3. Im currently running Anydvd HD to rip the disk to my desktop, then tsMuxer to create my .m2ts file. We will use Transformers for example. I rip the disk, select the main .m2ts file in tsMuxer, uncheck all audio files except AC3 & h.264. Let tsMuxer do its thing for a couple mins then I have my file. The problem is the file is anywhere from 31-33gb. Way to big to be transfered to a FAT32 formatted external HD with out splitting. Now my question, while searching for solutions I ran across a file on a site that was valkryie.m2ts 3.9gb. According to all the comments its plays just fine on the PS3. Now, when I tried to rip my copy of valkryie after all the above process I still get a finished file of 22gb. How are they getting the main moive unsplit to under 4gb? Anyone have a solution?
The ones that you see online are just one resolution (i.e. 720p or 1080p). When you are backing up your Blu-Ray, they might be ripping the whole disc, not just the 720p or 1080p movie file!
It could also be that the online copy you're getting has re-encoded it to make it smaller. Happens all the time with DVDs - sometimes right back into .vob (which is what I do; DVDShrink main movie + single audio track to 4GB file), and sometimes into lossy formats like .avi.
Ok, well id rather keep the quality since thats the whole point of blu ray. What if I used BD rebuilder to redo the disc, then use tsMuxer. Would that cut down on size some but yet still keep the quality? Im not worried about all the extra features etc. Just the main movie. Im also not opposed to having 1-3 splits.
Another thing, when you split the .m2ts file and its played back on the PS3 is it suppose to cut out 20-30secs of the moive when it startes playing the next split? I used tsMuxer last night to make one m2ts file, then split using HDBDsplitGUI 4000mib. After watching the playback on PS3 I noticed it cutting out some of the movie when it swapped to the next part. It could be to that tsMuxer was set to do chapters (forgot to change).
What file size suits?
Even ripping the main movie from the disc will be a fair size, if you want your movies to be... lets say 10gigs, the only way you,ll achieve this is compression resulting in loss of quality. Theres no other way around it.

Id like to see 15-20gb size. That would put me at max 4 splits. Im going to play around with a few things and see what I can come up with
