I dont anyone has asked or done this yet, if they have then I must have missed the post.
So we all know if you take a hdd from one ps3 and place it into another ps3 it asks you to format the drive. But now with the jailbreak out with a lot of piracy, you're gonna need a LOT of hdd space!
We know internal is better and more compatible at the moment, but limited to a 750GB hdd, sound like a lot, but I backed up my 14 games and it took up 300GB of space!
So what if you dont want an external hdd but want a larger internal drive? you can buy a 1TB internal drive but these are too thick to fit in a ps3.
So I decided to see what happens if you have two 2.5" sata drives both formatted by the same ps3?
Good news, you can swap them around anytime you want! The ps3 will start up with either hdd. This means if you dont want an external enclosure next to your ps3, or having to make space for a plug socket to power your external hdd, you can simply have a second hdd in your desk or shelf or where ever, and when you need it simply swap the drives.
Now the next thing is where to buy hdd caddies for both the slim and phat consoles, I know phat ones are being sold on ebay, but nothing on the slim. Having an extra caddy with screws means you can quickly swap the drives whenever you want, just like the good ol' snes and mega drive days!
I tested this on a ps3 slim, the two hdds were identical model make and size, but I am sure it will work with other drives and sizes, dont have a different hdd on hand atm so will test later to make sure.

I have a 2TB Internal ESATA. Just connect a male/female SATA cable from the PS3 internal to your HD outside powered by an external source. This way it becomes an internal

Well this is for people who do not want to have an external hdd next to their ps3, or do not have a spare plug socket or dont like having a loose wire sticking our of their console.

That would be cool if the PS3 would recognize it as 1 HD. I wonder though if the floppy type power connector could really power all 5 HD's
I know it would see them all as one drive, and the floppy power connector is just to power the device; not the drives. The questions come in when people are having trouble using 3TB drives; if 3TB does not work, then neither will 10TB.

This is where I'm stuck, do i got with the idea i posted, which is more expensive but requires less space, or do we go with an external enclosure which requires more space and an extra plug socket.
But is 3tb is the limit for aps3, you will still have to swap over different drives in teh enclosure when you fill up your hdd.

Are you using a Fat or Slim ? And what FW version ?
I was going to try this, as I have a 2 TB external e-Sata drive. But after researching, I found multiple reports or people saying the PS3 is incompatible with internal drives over 1 TB.
Using a 1 TB internal drive works OK, but anything over that, and the PS3 reboots to a "black screen" after trying to format the drive.

Up to 2 TB is OK for external drives though, via USB, provided they're formatted as FAT32.

From what I understand, the 1tb limitation is in the format utility. The PS3 uses UFS on the internal drive. This means a limit of 8 zettabytes!
Logically, this should allow us to make a bit-for-bit copy of an old drive to a 3TB drive...then use GrowFS under Solaris to expand the partition to fill the disk.
Of course, that is all just theory. It is possible that Sony cut a few other corners resulting in issues with drives over 1TB...
