I want to update my ps3. I'm tired of waiting for the ps3 scene to blossom with custom firmwares and stuff, but at the same time I don't want to update as is and be banned from the PSN. Would a full HD wipe out fix my any potential PS jail break files on the system?

cool

Remove the drive and connect it to a PC (I'll assume windows).

Open the command prompt as administrator
type diskpart[enter]
type list disk[enter]
type select disk X[enter] (where X is replaced with the number of that disk...usually identified by the size...make sure you get the correct disk or you could loose a lot.).
type clean[enter]
type create partition primary[enter]
type exit[enter]exit[enter]

...then put the drive back in, put the 3.55 update .pup file onto a flash drive, and you will be starting from a nice clean nothingness.

Surely the ps3 format utility would be good enough?

This is a nice method to make it clean and tidy. It can clean out all of your PS3 break files.

Nope...it would if it was actually a format utility, but I think someone at sony got confused in translation, because it is little more than a scandisk. I only used it once...it took 16 hours and it didn't even erase my accounts! Heck, it won't even erase and replace corrupted system files; meaning that users often have to do the above procedure as a repair to an OS problem. 1 minute on a PC in diskpart and the disk is like new...or 16 hours in the PS3 format utility and nothing changes...the choice is clear.
