It is not just the CReaders, is it? There is the HW BWC ps3's, the partHW partSW BWC ps3's the none BWC, the slims...... even sony have troubles with FW's and programing the PS3's, just look the Ingame XMB? it's still goes as slow as hell, you think that sony wants igXMB to be so damn slow? well i dont.
btw... is anyone 100% sure that the mac adress is the only way that sony tracks down the PS3's? i am not.
For the backwards compatable units, they should include everything needed in that "PS2 system data" pack...like an addon; so if you have a 60GB and don't want PS2 support, you don't have it.
The ingame XMB goes slow because there isn't enough memory. The games easily eat up everything the system has, and many of them would work better if more ram was available (the PC versions of the same games can use over 8 times more ram than the PS3 has total for ram and vram). The ingame XMB is a new feature (was not there at system release), and thus it has to live on a tiny scrap of leftover memory.
