I am considering purchasing another PS3 as an alternative to a dedicated blu ray player. I had a 60 gig PS3 previously, which lasted 14 months (of light use) before the blu-ray died. Sony would not repair under warranty, even though it was obvious premature failure was a significant issue. My question is, has Sony made any hardware or software changes to address this, or can I expect roughly the same service life out of a new console?

I have a 20gb launch model with BC, an 80gb with part BC and a 120gb Slim and lots of friends/family with various PS3 models. Mine get good use and I haven't had an issue personally, I know of only a very few within my circle that have had a problem...if you have concerns then I would suggest an additional extended warranty plan from either the place of purchase or from Sony directly as that is available (with a discount through a subscription with PS+ as well). You could also fix your PS3 for less than sending it in if that helps?
