Ok, so we all know that Sony removed OtherOS because of the potential for a future crack that might allow for piracy for a few days before Sony releases another update. They are clearly very concerned about piracy; to the point that they will remove selling features to prevent it from happening even for a short time.
The new news is that the PS3 drives (both slim and fat) have been hacked, and it will soon be possible to read and write the drive firmware. This means that there is a potential path to piracy, and that such an approach would not be patchable with a new system firmware. Considering the huge piracy potential here, it seems inevitable that Sony will remove BluRay support...making the PS3 a download-only system.
...So now I am trying to see the future, and I see only four potential results...
1.) Sony removes BluRay support completely, or at least for all games.
2.) No new BluRay games will be made; the PS3 will become a download-only system, at least for new games.
3.) They just give up and let the system get hacked with the knowledge that this will increase both hardware and software sales?
4.) They do #3, and then return OtherOS because they know it is harmless, and they will be able to get out of the lawsuit.
So, poll time...my money is on #1...seems like Sony's style.

I don't think they will go as far as disabling the Blu Ray Drive, it would affect so many more people than the removal of OtherOS did, but saying that, i really didn't think they would remove the OtherOS function either, especially after the said they wouldn't.

My cynic is betting on 1.
My optimist is betting on 4.
And my lost hope is betting on 5.) They release the PS4 early and stop all production of PS3 and PS3 games.

If you honestly think Sony will "remove" BD from PS3's and make them DL only then I got a bridge to sell you...CHEAP ;P
I would actually hope they re-implement OtherOS if they see the BD drive being hacked as on out for the lawsuit (which is going nowhere but why chance it) since it's a lost cause to fight at that point.

I think it's too early to go to download only. I would certainly be upset if they did. I also think that people that don't play online or have internet to the console would be upset as well. I can only hope that OtherOS will be restored and that they give up trying to protect the console from hackers. Do the mandatory maintenance to try and keep hackers away, so far they've done a great job, and then just let it go. The majority of people out there do not care about playing backups.
Another thing they could do is have more entertaining games and features that will attract new customers. They say it's a computer system and not a gaming system, well then come out with more parts to upgrade the console (performance and appearance, etc.)

1-Not in million to drop BD Support.
2-To make a System like that DLC only is out of this planet, they will have to invest billions on servers etc etc, they will loose money from people with slow connections, people will not even bother to buy PS at all, they will have to ship PS3's with 10tb HDD's and for sure they must have learned their lesson from PSP Go.
3-They wont give up and i dont think that there isnt a way to lock it again. Sony will sell her soul before seeing PS3 hacked.
4-i dont believe that the otherOS will ever get back, even if they loose the case, there will be PS4 till then.
History showed us that every once in a wile someone pops up with a so called hack and they all say the same thing
"i found this and sony will not be able to patch it"
....yeah right.... almost 4 years later and the "unable sony" have managed to patch even my toaster.
The question isn't if sony can patch it....but if sony can detect it.

Considering how big games are removing BR is not an option.
People do not want to wait days to download a game, and have enough space to store less than 5 games on their PS3.
Until faster internet is standard(probably 100 MBit/s(if possible in the future)) DLC only wont be standard on the next gen systems.
Sony also won't go back to DVDs, because games like FF13 and LO take up 3 and 4 DL DVDs respectively.

Don't be so sure...the PSPgo was download-only, and it didn't even have an internet connection! Clearly sony does not care if their download-only devices can actually download. Sure, the PSPgo was a huge failure, but Sony is known for repeating huge failures 10-20 times before they finally learn the lesson that everyone else figured out before they started.

People don't want a lot of things. I don't want firmware updates that brick my system, I don't want firmware updates that remove features, I don't want my system to wait until it is overheating before finally turning on the fan at 25%, I don't want to have to leave a game to chat with a friend in another game, and I don't want to have to leave that chat in order to check trophies...but clearly Sony wants all of these things, and thus, I have to put up with all these things (other than the fan...I fixed that with a soldering iron). Would it make sense to go download only? No, most users would not appreciate that...but what does Sony care about making people happy?
BTW...while I think most users would not like going DL-only, I personally would be fine with it. My schedule makes going to the store a bother, and waiting for shipping from amazon is almost as bad. If I could just DL the game in an hour, in the middle of the night, and then I could just play it like any other PSN game (without needing to get up and change disks), I would like my system a lot more.

Most games are well below 25GB, so if he has a fast connection, it wont take that long to download.

Even if games needed 700mb no way DL-only and lets do some maths....
ps3 have sold about 35-36million consoles?
excluding dead consoles, people that have 2-3 ps3's, super computers etc etc... lets say that unique gamers are about 30mils??? sounds right??
Last time i checked PSN had only about 20milion users..... and by having in mind that most of the users have 2-3 accounts (1 for the EU PSS, 1 for US PSS an so on) I believe that from the starting number of 35m's under 50% are even registered to PSN.
Plus the reasons that i've wrote in my previews post, DLC Only is out of the question.
Just imagine whats the number that used the otherOS , it must be under 500.000 and IMO most of the fat consoles are dead anyway.
@killerbug
Sony may not want to keep their people happy, and PS3 may lack some features (actually 2, cross game chat and in game music)...
but buy having the PS3 from day 1.... 3+ years later the XMB must have twice the icons/features that had when i bought it.
I got a YLOD recently, yes i am pissed off with it and more pissed off cause i have 2xps1 2xps2 and the most advanced/sophisticated PS3 is the only one that died.
I was pissed off that they removed the otherOS (never used it though) but that hitler style... made me furious.
but truth to be said......even if Sony or MS say that with every console you'll get a Zonda Convertible, people will come out and say i wanted a Yugo cause Zonda consumes a lot of fuel.
