Buying a PS3 now...

I just googled about PS3 hacks and I found out something about jailbreak and that you can play backups, now, I don't have a PS3 yet, but I'm getting one, so if I buy it in walmart or something right now, what firmware will it be on? I don't want 3.42 as it patched the exploit, i'd like to get the 320 gb but it is going to be released on September 19, will it have 3.42 on it?

Best bet wait. I have ordered a 320gb console which is released on the 17th here in the UK. I'll let you know what fw mine is then.
But people are saying that there is no way sony can upload the new 3.42 fw onto these new consoles in such a short period of time. Afterall they have to ship all over the world, so that'd be thousands of consoles. So technically they should already be boxed and packed ready for shipping by now if they havent already been shipped.
But to be on the safe side you wait until you find out what fw these come with. I'll confirm mine next week but you might want to ask someone in the US to confirm as well before buying one yourself.
I've ordered the 320gb with move starter pack, seems the cheapest to me, afterall you can backup games now. Here its £270, with the starter pack selling at £50 if bought separately, so technically getting the console for £220, which is a saving of at least £30.

The only reason I want a 320gb is because of the big HDD size, but I heard you can use a 2.5mm sata HDD you buy and install it to the PS3?
Will the sata HDD that you install on the PS3 be slower or faster than the PS3's HDD?
If it's at the same speed then I won't get this 320gb version, I risk getting 3.42, plus, 360GB isn't even enough for me, I wanna get like 1tb sata drive and install to the PS3.
So, how does the speed goes for the sata HDD that you install to the PS3?

Well the phat PS3 are 5400rpm. The fastest you can get are 7200rpm. Now people have added the 7200s to the PS3 but it adds more heat due to the higher revs.
The slims, idk you;d have to ask someone else. but seeing as they are smaller and use 60% less electricity they should run cooler.
Most 2.5" sata over 500gb are 5400rpm anyway and the largest on the market are 1tb i havent seen a 1.5tb or larger yet.
So basically its how much you can spend, any 2.5" sata drive will fit in the PS3. The ones that come with the PS3 are normal drives as well, my 80gb ps3 is a Hitachi 5400, but any make will do. The ps3 ones arent special and wont run faster or slower than any other 5400rpm drive. though 7200 will run faster.
Google ps3 7200rom some ppl a=have does some tests and found that getting a 7200 doesnt really much difference so you might as well get a 5400.

If all you care about is the space (the only advantage of the 320GB), you can just go out and buy a much better harddrive elsewhere...you can get a 1TB drive if you want; you can even use an adapter to connect an external ESATA drive of 2TB or possibly more with hardware raid.

Anybody have any further insight into this question? I too would be interested in purchasing the new 320gb version but don't want it to already have 3.42 on it. I could care less about PSN just as long as back-ups can be played.

Hi all, as promised I would tell you when I got my new slim PS3.
I got it today, 1 day early! Anyway what you all want to know is what firmware it's on. I got the 320GB PS3 with the Move Starter Pack, I can confirm firmware version is 3.40
So get the current batch before they are sold out and Sony start shipping with 3.42+

I just ordered one from Newegg last night, it's the 160 GB version, that'll definitely be 3.41 or lower right?

Well its all an assumption based on mine. But it should be pretty safe getting the 160gb and 320gb for now and they should have fw 3.40 on them.
But Sony will be puttin 3.50 on all the new ones that are currently being manufactured, so my guess come xmas it may be pretty hard to find a new console with 3.40 on it. SO the earlier you get the new ps3s the more chance of it having the jailbrekable firmware.
Alos remember the jailbreak only works on 3.41, so you will have to download it from the net, and install it onto your ps3 via a usb memory stick.
One thing is didnt like, looks like the slims come with a shorter power cable than that of the phat. Had to juggle around with my plugs so I could place the ps3 where my phat one was.
