Cant Get INto Recovery menu!

Hey guys.love the forums here.i recently bought a secondhand 40 GB ps3 console and have been trying to get into the recovery menu.its a pal ps3 unit and every time im holding the power button,i get 1 beep and then switches off,after that i hold it again i get 1 beep again and then switches off? y?,its supposed to give 2 beeps then recovery menu? but it just goes off again.Please assist me guys.Thanks or and btw the firmware installed is 2.46-really old,so i need to update it.Thanks

Hi, i can tell u only the way how i get into RM
hold the power button till the ps3 shutdown
immediately after the shutdown press the button again then after 5-10 sec a first beep came
the 2 -5 sec after that 2 beeps then release the button now u should be in recovery mode
