To anyone who knows, what is the biggest external hard drive that can be hooked up and functional on a ps3. i see some that are around 4 to 6TB. but not sure if you could actually run something so big off your ps3. i got a buddy who has a 2TB western digital external but says it has loading and playback problems. is this because of the size? RPM? or just a shitty drive? any info would be appreciated

I've got a 1TB drive and it loads up fine. The issue seems to come when I simply have a slow USB port. My PS3 can pick it up easily, and so could my PC after I updated its USB controller (before the driver update, it had been acting as a USB 1.1 port... ick). It's recognized just as quickly as my flash drive, and it has the double hassle of being partitioned into two drives (so the PS3 can only recognize one of the partitions).

I've never had any sort of playback problems unless the issue was with the video/audio itself. And Western Digital are renown (well, maybe not renown, but certainly well-known) for their quality products, so I doubt it's necessarily the drive's fault.

...as for size, there are no caps as of yet. Hope that helps.

Are you talking about external drives connected by the ESATA converter or by USB? The limit for USB is 2TB (this is the limit of FAT32, the only external format that PS3 supports). If you are talking about the ESATA route, no one has found the limit yet as far as I know.

2TB FAT32 is problematic, as the smallest of files are 64MB at least...I'd stick with 1TB or smaller per partition.

Killer, what's this 64MB minimum you're talking about? I've stored files on my drives much, much smaller than 64MB. Or is this an issue with only 2TB drives?

Actually im not so sure about that, i had a Western Digital drive start acting up on me, so i gave my computer guy a call (dude thats been running a computer store for 20 years) and said they were actually known for taking a dive on people, heres a link he sent me through email http://forums.randi.org/showthread.php?p=5085997 im just quoting him, but this guy seems to know his stuff. anyways yha, i have 2 1TB WD External HDD'S that are already full and they have worked great, but it seems like anything over that size just gets a little funky with the ps3. and KillerBug im pretty sure you can find 4-6 TB Externals in FAT32, or atleast with USB 2.0 .... idk, here check these out

(if not, im sure a quick format would do the job)

but what your saying about the smallest files defenetly catches an eye . my friend says that it seems to do it more when hes going through pictures. witch are some small files. :? ill take your word though, think ill just go with another 1TB and so on and so on until SSD's are cheap enough to buy. lol

Hm... could be. I dunno, I don't know hard drives well enough to tell you anything concrete.

Those aren't single drives, though - they're 4 hard drives in a RAID setup. But that's beside the point.
