Hi, can anyone tell me if you can set up a PS3 to run with an external drive only (internal drive completely removed),i know that the drive needs to be formatted to FAT32 and folders placed for the PS3 to recognise an external drive, but will it boot with it???

It will boot regardless of whether you have a hard drive or not, external or internal.

The only "external" drive you can use still needs to be connected to the PS3's internal SATA port in order to save game data. If you're connected via USB, you won't be able to save that stuff.
