Hey everyone
I know there are several threads on formatting a hard drve for use with a PS3 but I am using Windows 7os and I couldn`t find anything on that.
My external hard drive is 1TB. Can you explain in very basic terms how I can get this to work with PS3?
Idk if that big of drive can be used but...if its brand new than connect it to the ps3 with a ps3 update file on a flash drive or a cd and follow the prompts
Yes, you can use 1TB hard drives with your PS3, both internal and external.
florence, are you planning on just using the hard drive to store movies, videos, etc.? Or do you want to use it as the PS3's main hard drive?
If you just want to use it for videos/music/pictures/backup, then what quick research I've done has shown that the best program to use is fat32format, found here:
It's a simple program, and the author noted that it doesn't check for errors and the like; it just does a quick format.
He doesn't say anything on his site about it working with W7, but other forums are saying it works, so it seems good. Hopefully it works for you.

If you're going to use it for game data storage and stuff like that, then that's something else entirely. You'll have to get an adapter that connects to the (SATA?) port of the PS3 - where the internal hard drive sits - and connect it to your drive that way. It won't look too good, and I'm assuming the drive has to have an eSATA interface, but that's how you'll have to do it.
There won't be any formatting required, either, since the PS3 will automatically do it for you.
EDIT:
Also, I forgot to say this, but most Linux LiveCDs or LiveUSBs have partition editors that'll allow you to format your entire hard drive. (This is what I used to format my 1TB drive.) It's the safest way, for me, but it requires an OS download, some fiddling, some disc-burning, so it's not recommended if you just want a quick format.
