Hi All,
I have acquired a PS3 (big version) which freezes after about 20 mins, I then need to leave it cool for about a hour to use it again. I have replaced the heatsink compound with AS5 and its . What other fixes should I try.
Thanks in advance
Mike

Might want to test out the PSU. The fan might be screwy. The BD drive might be old. Hard drive could be broken. Um... it might be the environment you've placed it in. D'you have it in an area that allow plenty of air circulation?
How, where, and when did you get it? Also, what condition was it in? Did the original owner tell you about any defects it had?

My cousin had a PS3 that did the same exact thing it eventually turned to having worse graphics problems choppy graphics freezing ect, im pretty sure its the RSX graphics chip thats damaged sorry to say but you need it repaired or it will probably get worse to the point of not being playable.

I swapped this with a friend for a Xbox 360. It prolly hasn't been kept in the best conditions, he got it second hand himself.
It will crash even on the dash, so I don't think its a bluray player issue.
So its either gonna be the PSU or the main board, is that right?
Also, I have read some posts about heat gunning the main board, is it worth it? I know that it works about 90% of the time for xbox 360's but i have little or no experience with PS3's

I have eliminated the power supply by trying in another PS3, so I heagunned the board and its not been running for a few hours :D
Only problem is that I cant seem to get it to go to HDMI, my tv only does 1080i could that be the problem? I have tried holding the power button until the second beep and it doesnt come on the TV.
Cheers
Mike

Usually if the video RSX chip is acting up, as you described, heat gunning the board is NOT recommended as more heat can damage the board and the RSX chip permanently. I do repairs on PS3's all the time and it's true that heat gunning the board works most of the time. If your not careful when you heat gun the board though, you could over heat it and damage the chips and more. I recommend a new PS3 brother. I'm sorry to say. Unless you want to send it to someone or even Sony and spend the price of a new PS3 on the repair. That's my input anyway.
