Hey guys, sorry if this question has been asked numerous times in the past, only i'm a bit lost regarding the whole issue. I've read up partially about DMZ and such, but it talks about routers etc and all I have in my room is 1 ethernet port :)

So yeah if there is a way to access PSN for me then I'd be highly grateful for any help at all :) And even though I'm a bit of a newbie in this area I'd be happy to provide any feedback/information needed.

Thanks for reading.

What is the issue?
Do you receive any errors etc whilst trying to connect?

I wen't through a guide off this website, http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/610541 - I've done everything that I can do on the console, but when it comes to entering my internal IP in the address bar on my PC nothing comes up. Just an 'Unable to connect' error.

For the sake of it I decided to test the connection on the PS3 after doing everything that was asked on the console, and I got 'DNS error (80710102)'. And that was with uPnP enabled/disabled.

Makes everything a tad more annoying due to having to keep replacing the ethernet cable from the pc into the ps3 to try new random things :p 1 ethernet slot sucks :p

Okay first off do you have a desktop or laptop PC? Second, if you have a laptop, does the college have wifi? Major institutions use Cisco systems routers which are encrypted and maintained by the school's IT department. You will not be able to access this type of router to enable DMZ. So you have one ethernet port in your dorm? Have you tried plugging the ps3 into that port, and setting the PS3 to automatic when setting up an internet connection? If that works for you we will go from there.

Edit: I just think I remembered a solution to your problem. When you connect with your PC and start your browser does the first page redirect you to some sort of authentication? If it does then that is the problem. Set the PS3 network connection to automatic, but don't test the connection. Open up the PS3's web browser, the authentication redirect should come up on your PS3 as it would on your PC. Input your credentials (as you would when first logging into the internet on your PC) then log onto the PSN.

DMZ is useless to you since you can't access the router. If that doesn't work I have a couple more solutions we can try.

Many major institutions have moved away from Cisco due to the terrible quality and constant hardware failures. 3Com and Intel have taken up most of the slack.

Thanks for the reply, for starters I have a Desktop PC. To quickly answer, I plugged the PS3 into the port that I use for my desktop and tried automatic, and it gave me this message 'An attempt to obtain an IP address timed out'.

In regards to your edit, yes I have to enter credentials but not from an internet page, a window will pop up above the toolbar from the network icon (2 pc's with a yellow triangle) after I enter my details it will connect me. So I don't know if that would work on the PS3.

The only other piece of info I know regarding the network is that I had to set it up when I arrived here, via computer > manage > Services and applications and so on. Oh and 1 other thing, I currently use 'Your-Freedom' and 'Proxycap' to enable me to play some online games on my PC, well I can access 'WoW' :x I was briefly told that it is possible to use these programs to get onto the internet with a PS3 but my searches have been unsuccessful so far.

Again, thanks for the help so far :)

Edit - Here is a link to the Your-freedom' site in regards to connecting a PS3/Xbox etc, it's at the bottom of the page. http://www.your-freedom.net/index.php?id=175 hope it helps.

You could try running a proxy on the computer along with an eithernet bridge. But unless you get a subscribtion proxy it will likely be fairly laggy.

I have a subscription for Your-Freedom so it should be ok, only do you mind being a little more clear with the whole ethernet bridge? I'll go try and find some stuff out about trying to access PSN this way, but I guess it's not as easy as it sounds :p

Its essentially using your PC as a router thereby masking the fact that the ps3 is on the network from the university's view. I've tried it a few times in the past, unsuccessfully. so I couldnt properly explain how to go about it properly.

there could be a myriad of issues.

1. you may simply need to invest in a router.

2. you might need to go to your universities website and register the device. (I had to register my psp & Iphone to get online while on campus)
