I bought a faulty 80gb PS3 in the hopes of being able to fix it. I have fixed one before (a 40gb) but when I opened it up this one looked much different. It doesn't accept discs and it looks like the two little tabs in the yellow circles have snapped off. Is this what the 80gb model looks like on the inside? Or do I need a whole new blu ray drive? Could the reason it is not accepting discs be that there is no visible optical sensor?

Hey There,
I just finished reassembling my 80GB PS3 and it looks just like what you show here accept like you say, the two white plastic tabs (as you call them) look like they are missing part of them and they also have two gray plastic parts that fit over the two white "tabs" They just fit over them lightly, no snapping on or anything. They need to be placed on them properly for the drive to accept and eject the right way. The gray parts really only fit two different ways and if I had mine apart I would take pics for you but if you get them and put them on you can sort of just slid a disc is the way it would normally go in and it will go in without binding up at all if they are on right. If they are are wrong you will notice how they start to bind up about half way in and not go in right. Also the very top pic you posted, the top yellow circled white "tab" part looks like it might be broken. It's hard to tell because the picture is out of focus. I hope this helps. I just have a very clear picture of the unit in my head since I just replaced my bluray drive assembly and I had a hell of a time with that exact part. I had to take it apart a couple times because I didn't get it right the first time. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.
OH!! the optical sensor should be on the top half and it connects with a red and black wired connection. very very small wires too.

Hmm ok looks like the grey tabs and the little wire are completely missing. As well as the optical sensor.
Do you have any pics of yours?

You can get a good look at the optical sensor too. It's on the other half of the assembly.

New pics added!
From that link this is the grey tabby bits I am talking about

Is it that the 80gb doesn't have these? Or are they supposed to be there? This would explain why the machine isn't accepting any discs

Yeah. The 80GB is supposed to have them. That's what I have, The 80GB and mine had them and if they aren't placed on the white tabs right, it won't accept the disc right. But yes if you have the 80BG PS3 than you'll need them for it to work right.

Any idea where I can get them? Or what they are called? Because I would need the little spring wires too.

Not a clue. I got the bluray assembly from HERE I don't know if they sell the plastic parts by themselves. I hope they do or someone does for your sakes anyways. It would really suck to have to buy the whole bluray drive just for those two parts.
By the looks of your pictures, it looks like your missing the white parts/tabs on one side of your dive and the lower tab on one side also looks like it's missing part of it.

Yea, I took another pic of the specific part I need.

This shouldn't be too hard to source right?

I'm looking around the web right now and I'm not finding anything. The best I've found so far is a site that sells PS3 systems and parts for cheap. The systems are non working and most likely have the parts you need but you really have no way of knowing if they are good or broken like the one you have now until you get it and see for your self. So I don't know what your best bet is. I would think you would be able to get those parts somewhere, I just don't know where.
Here's the site I found: PS3 Parts/Systems

Do you think it would be better if I just bought a brand new blu ray drive?

Seems like the whole construction is different to the guides on the internet! If you look at the picture of the drive, the one with the red oblong there is no screw hole at all for an optical sensor. But flip it round and there is what looks to be a cable that resembles an optical sensor? Any idea?
