This is kind of a long story but it's necessary to get the details out of the way before asking for assistance with my problem. First I want to get two things out of the way:
1. This is not a yellow light error
2. My PS3 warranty is void and I've opened the console up to do repairs.
That being said, here we go:
I received my PS3 as a gift from a friend in 2008. It was not new, she mailed it to me, but did a terrible job packaging it. When I received it, the console was externally damaged. The plastic case was bent and broken along where the two halves meet at the power/eject button. As a result, the eject button does not work at all, but the console still plays games perfectly fine. I simply used the option to eject the disk by pressing triangle.
The system worked up until now just fine, but recently has stopped reading disks entirely. This began when watching a dvd movie inside the console. I watched the movie, turned the console off, realized I forgot to eject the disk, and then when I turned the console back on to eject it, it did not detect the disk at all on the menu. I received no error messages, the disk simply didn't appear.
I disassembled the console to retrieve the disk, and found that it still read PS3 games and other movies, just not the one that had been stuck inside.
Thinking my console was fine, I let my friend borrow the console to play a 3 disk copy of Final Fantasy VII. About 30 hours into the game it stopped reading the second disk and I had to disassemble the console again to get the disk out. What was noteworthy was that this time the console beeped three times when it failed to read the disk, but no other error was given. No code, no flashing lights, just three beeps.
So when I disassembled the console, I looked around the internet and discovered the problem of Blu Ray lenses breaking and causing disk read errors. I looked up the number for my laser lens, Kes-400a, and ordered a brand new one. The lens came today and I installed it just fine, but the console will still not read any media inside it. Since my eject button is broken, I have to disassemble every time to get the disk out.
Does anyone have any suggestions at what might be causing this disk read/disk spinning failure? It's almost certainly not the Blu-ray lens.
The first thing i would do is fix the eject...if it is a fat model, there are two contacts that come up from the mainboard to below the eject button. If the eject button is destroyed, you can solder in a simple momentary switch, just make sure that these contacts do not get pressed together when you put the case back on.
a disc not spinning usually means that the laser is not working, so you need to check whether the laser is working
i test the PS3s i fit lasers too with the top covers off, and the steel cover off the bluray drive, then with a clear disc, these come in CD/DVD spools, you can see if the laser is working,
in a darkened room, you can see the the laser beams using a normal disc
plus all the ribbon cables have to be correctly fitted, i had a new laser not reading last week, but after resetting all the ribbon cables, the laser now works perfectly

never seen or had a bad chip, so don't start worrying the OP for no reason

Well I fix these things for a living and I see it all the time! It wil cause the disc not to spin somtimes, somtimes the disk will spin but no data will be trasfered. But whatever just trying to help.
