Hi everyone, it's been a long time since I've been on the forum.

But I need some help on which model to choose for a PS3 purchase.
I'd like to have PS2 compatibility and have the system to be mechanically reliable.

My GameStop has every single model of PS3 - 20GB, 60GB, 80GB w/ 4USB, 80GB w/ 2 USB, 160GB, and the Slim. Of course some of these are used ;)

But, I work at Wal*Mart and get 10% off of the PS3 slim, and I do own a PS2.

So, suggestions?

60GB used is $330.XX, 20GB used is $279.XX
Have Slims any mechanical or software problems thus far? (Besides the Dual-Shock3 issue with the last firmware update)

Your friend in nam is not lying. She has a modded PS2, and the modder was generous enough to relabel the PS2 to PS3.
Then the pirate selling games relabeled Assassins Creed 1 and called it Assassins Creed 2. This is called marketing.
Your friend is honest and thinks she plays AC2 on a PS3. In reality she is playing AC1 on a PS2.

Just use your PS2 slim for PS2 games...the PS3's upscaling looks terrible compaired to the upscaling built-in to most HDTV sets. I think all PS3 units freeze once in a while...GTAIV has crashed my 40GB fatline several times.

If you want reliable, you are not going to get it from a used 60gb unit that had a high failure rate to begin with.

we have 4 ps3's in the house, a 60 with a 500gb hdd in it a 80gb a 8gb metal gear and a new slim. the only problem with the older ones was do to me running folding at home in the summer on a day that it was over a 100 and no ac running. started playing ps2 games on them but that was when i got my first ps3 when they came out. now i dont touch them. i like the 60gb cause it was 2 more usb port and the card slots that i do use. otherwise they are all about the same even the new slim.realy doesnt matter what 1 you get as long as you have one.

Not all of the old units are definately bad...but they do have an incredibly high failure rate...higher than the Xbox360 by some accounts. Given that the PS2 feature can be acomplished better by using an actual PS2...the only advantages are the card reader and the extra USB ports. A $10 USB hub and a $10 USB card reader will give you both of these features, without the fear of wearing out the built-in ports with constant plugging and unplugging. If I had a 20/60GB, I would still be using my USB hub with it.

the slim gets real hot sometimes hotter then the fats cause the hdd is now in the front under the bluray drive and some of the disks come out real hot. and i am seeing alot more the fat ones failing from overheating. but i still think mine was do to me. i use all the usb ports on mine for chargeing my controllers,bt mic and camra but i leave the cables plugged in. i did see a usb add on that takes up 1 usb port but gives you three and a sd slots as well i us the sd slot all the time so i may get 1 for my slim and see how it works

I have an 80GBer and it has the 4 USB and Card Readers...I find that I use a flash drive in the USB more than anything and I have a Sony Camera and 2 PSP's in the house. I agree that using the PS3...or placing value on using the PS3 to play PS2 games is really self imposed...I really never play my old PS2 games on my PS3, and I still have a Phat PS2 so it helps keep me isolated to one tube while my children can be occupied on another playing the PS2. Also I too have seen the port expansion packs (Hubs), turning one USB slot into 3 and adding a multi card reader...the one I saw was $19.99, I'm sure you can find it for a better deal. (Check out Gizmodo / Nyko Media Hubs)

After just recently experiencing the YLOD on my 80, I'd say go with the slim...or whatever you go with get an extended warranty/service plan...it's not gonna last forever.

It's true that PS3 graphics make you want to forget about the PS2, the only PS2 game I still play is Gran Turismo 4...and that's because there is only one gran turismo on PS3, and it is a $30 demo. It will loose all value to me as soon as GT5 comes out.
