You cannot play PS2 games on the slim and there is no way of making the PS3 do so either.

No. The original PS3 could play PS2 games, but it had a different chip set, and it would only play PS2 games that were on DVD. It would not play PS2 games on CD. Subsequent PS3's were not backward compatible, so keep your PS2 unit to play your PS2 games that you like, and Your PS3 for playing PS3 games and for playing Blu-Ray movies.

lol i dont know who told you that rubbish, but its not true, the BC PS3's can play both CD and DVD PS2 games.

angat17kr if you can get your hands on a 60GB 20GB or an early US 80GB model, i would go for one of those as they are backwards compatiable.

Or you can hope the rumour about Sony releasing software emulation on all console version this spring is true. If it isnt then hope someone hacks the PS3 to allow homebrew to run on it.

A hack or update will not make an RSX chip appear in the non BC consoles.

Software Emulation, The Pal consoles that are backwards compatible don't have the 'Emotion Engine' Chip that the US ones have.
If they do release an update for it i'll be getting a slim straight away. that's the only reason i still want my 60Gb. Well that and it looks better.

The ps2 had the emotion processing chip and the RSX graphics chip. US BC PS3 had both of these chips in it. The PAL had software emulation + the RSX chip. Non BC PS3 don?t have the PS2 RSX in them. Software emulation is possible, just nothing to process the graphics.

Thats my understanding anyway.

Thats true, but the EU 60GB also had the Graphics Synthesizer chip, which is not present in the slim models.

For software emulation to work on the slim, it would have to emulate the EE and GS, which would probably mean less compatiable PS2 games than the 60GB EU.

I am in Australia, and have the first release 60 gig PS3 backwards compatible, and I have tried my CD PS2 games, and IT WILL NOT READ THEM. It reads and played DVD PS2 games. Of course the PS3 in Australia is PAL not NTSC format. I stand by what I said, as my experience and that of others who have an Australian first release PS3 will attest.

Then that is a problem with your PS3, it has a fault, or your games are damaged.

I live in a PAL region also, my 60GB PS3 plays DVD and CD PS2 games, in fact your the only person i have ever heard of that has problems playing PS2 CD games on a BC PS3.

If you would like, i could make a video showing that its possible :)

EDIT:
From Wikipedia.

The PlayStation 3 disc drive is an all-in-one type allowing the use of different formats.

DVD
The DVD drive is an 8× speed, region coded type allowing the use of:
* PlayStation 2 DVD-ROM (PlayStation region matched; i.e., NTSC-J, NTSC-U/C, PAL or NTSC-C)

CD
The Compact Disc drive is a 24× speed, region coded type allowing the use of:
* PlayStation 2 CD-ROM (PlayStation region matched; i.e., NTSC-J, NTSC-U/C, PAL or NTSC-C, compatibility removed in 40 GB model, the second 80 GB model (CECHF), and the 160 GB model)
* PlayStation CD-ROM (PlayStation region matched; i.e., NTSC-J, NTSC-U or PAL)

That proves that yes the 60GB PS3 does indeed play CD based PS2 games, i have a few myself, Romance Of The Three Kingdoms VIII, being one, and i can play it quite well.

I second that my 60gb launch ps3 bought in the uk, is also able to play cd based games, you could have a faulty laser, try playing a music cd and see if that plays ok, if not then you'll more than likely need to clean/replace your laser.
