hi my ps3 is broken once again (YLOD) and im not going to be fixing it this time, im just gonna sell it on ebay for £50 but i need to wipe my hdd first! is an original 60gb ps3 with backward capability and the memory card readers! does anybody know how to wipe the HDD without the ps3 being turned on? i really hope its possibe!

The way I wiped mine or reformatted is is I bought an external HDD enclosure for a 2.5 SATA HDD.
I also used a Laptop with windows vista to format the HDD. Windows XP will not detect the HDD that is from the PS3 because of a software that the PS3 installs in the HDD once you put in the HDD in the PS3. It's so that you can't hack the PS3 or transfer it from PS3 to PS3.
Anyway, Once I had the HDD in the enclosure hooked up via USB cable to the laptop, I had to go to control panel, then administrative tool. Once your in administrative tool, you have to go to computer management.
From in there you need to go to storage and into disc management. You should now see 2 windows. The top windows should show you your HDD. If you have more than one like I do (i have an external) it should be showed as a list IE DesktopC (C:), New Volume (F:) if your have an external. If your PC does in fact detect the PS3 HDD that is in the enclosure it should show as a weird drive.
Process of elimination, so if you only have your primary HDD which is your C drive then it should be the second one on the list. If you have 2 HDD then it's obviously the third.
Once you've identified which one is the PS3 HDD you need to initialize it. Once it's initialize you can format it. You may have to format if to NTFS because windows will not format a HDD drive bigger than 32GB to FAT32. If your only planning on using your newly formatted HDD as am external HDD then your fine leaving it as NTFS. If your planning to use it for a PS3 as an internal HDD then the PS3 will format it for you. If you plan on using it as an external HDD for the PS3 then you will need to format it to FAT32. Again windows will not format a hard drive bigger than 32GB so you will need to use this.

It's software that will format any size HDD to FAT32. I formatted a 160GB 2.5" SATA drive recently and it worked. Best is its free.
Hope this helps you out. I know I said I used a laptop but you can used a desktop PC with a USB connection.
Also as I was doing this was able to do these same steps with Windows XP. I was not able to access the storage management part on my desktop PC which has windows XP when I first made the attempt to format the 160GB 2.5" sata HDD.
