I have an 80GB PS3 and when powering up it only goes as far as the main screen with the ribbon but will not load the xmb icons. I have tried searching, maybe not typing it correctly, but have come up with nothing. Has anyone had this problem before, and found a fix, without sending to Sony? Firmware is 3.15 and it worked just fine after the update too.

You may have to re-format the hard drive. Do that as a last step, though, as it'll wipe out all your data.

Try resetting the PS3 to its original settings by

1.) Turning the PS3 off,
2.) Holding down the power button until it shuts itself off again, and
3.) Turning the PS3 back on.

That should reset all the PS3's settings, and it might fix your issue. If not, there's also the debug menu or something like that, but I forget how to access that.
