Sorry if this sounds stupid.
To play PS3 games in 3D, do you need a 3D TV? What I thought was that it'll work on any TV but the 3D TVs will just enhance the experience.

Guess it's a useless feature for me then. I'd rather not spend $2000 on a 40" 3DTV when I bought my 52" Sony XBR6 for $1800 with free Blu-Ray Player. Unless they make cheap (sub 400) 22-32" 3DTVs I'll live without it =(

You do not need a 3D tv for 3d gaming...you just need a good 2D TV/monitor with a nice high refresh rate (120htz or better). A "3DTV" is just a nice 2D TV anyway. Many people have 3D capable screens and they don't even know it.

Can't say for sure until someone tests it, but I think it should...it is 120hz and it has a 60hz input. I don't think that it can handle 1080p 3D, but I believe it should support 1080i 3D, possibly 720p 3D as well.

Well I'll give it a try and post back. Would any set of 3D glasses work?

Any set should work...even the nVidia glasses should work with the PS3 assuming you can find an appropriate broadcaster.

What do you mean brodcaster? I was thinking of using 3D glasses from the movie theater. Those cheap plastic ones from Pixar movies.

These are not the same glasses. The glasses for home 3D are battery powered, and need to receive a signal from a control box. Sometimes this box is built into a 3D blueray player, sometimes it is a USB device. I think for the PS3, you will need a USB unit...but I am not 100% sure on that; it seems like they should be able to do it with bluetooth.

Holy crap those glasses are expensive. I'll live without 3D for now until 3D TVs become cheap and mass produced.

Same here...I'm waiting for $25 glasses on ebay, $50 glasses at bestbuy, and $200 glasses from Ralph Lauren...once these things are available, I'll get the $50 bestbuy glasses from Amazon for $30 shipped.

Last I checked, a 1080P VR headset goes for over $20,000.
Then again, you can get a 800x600 set for about $900..still a lot more than the $30 I intend to spend on 3D.

$20k, I'd rather save it or buy a car.
$900, I can buy 3 PS3s, 3 360s or every console this gen (360, PS3, Wii, DSi) and still have money left over.
I just got 3D glasses from an imax movie, I wish they'd work. That 3D is good enough for me.

That 3D is incredible; you would be lucky to get 3D like that at home from any kind of glasses...unless you were using a 200" screen that was compatible with those imax glasses of course.

How does Imax 3D work? Why isn't it possible to get that in a home theater?

Dont forget you also need hdmi 1.4 cable for the PS3 to output 3d content. And Iv never heard of 3d gaming that works on non 3d tvs with 120hz and above. I might have to look into this.
PS3...it only does everything(that Sony allows it to)

From what I have read, you only need HDMI 1.4 for 1080P 3D, and currently neither bluray nor the PS3 offer any 1080P 3D content. This might be inaccurate now, as that was a few weeks ago and there might have been some new releases since then, but none the less, 720P should work fine with a HDMI 1.3 cable and a screen that only supports HDMI 1.3, but has a high enough refresh rate.

Wow...that is some crap! They are only doing it to sell TVs; it is not necessary, and their content can't use HDMI 1.4 anyway.
If this really is the case, then I won't be going 3D; I would have been willing to spend a few bucks on the glasses...but if they intentionally block my 3D capable screens just to sell their new screens, then they can just keep their whole 3D gimmick...no way I am buying a screen from a company that intentionally blocks their own screens from using new media; they will just block my new screen next week!

Yea I wont be jumping on the 3d gaming/tv bandwagon anytime soon. I'l wait for it to become more popular and more affordable. I'l stick with 3d movies at the theater for now.

They can keep their 3D movies; the only allure of 3D to me is the games; and without wide adoption, we will see nothing but "gimmick games"...the already thin plots will be made thinner than rice paper, and the controls will be destroyed, especially once move is available. No way I'm going back to the theaters; they have only gotten worse since I got fed up with their high prices and terrible service...if I really want 3D movies, I will just do it with my PC; that way I won't have some arbitrary rule requiring me to have HDMI 1.4 devices, when the signal is going to be a HDMI 1.3 signal anyway.
