OK so I don't yet have a ps3 but have been looking into getting a preowned older model to "jailbreak". From what I have read it seems that It needs to have fw 3.55 or below to be jail broken, But If i do get an older "phat" ps3 and it has a new firmware is there an easier way to downgrade it without installing an e3 flasher or something similar?
and also If i get that far ahead and end up with a ps3 with cfw, is it possible to play back ups of newer titles etc? or will they not work due to needing newer ofw?
sorry if this doesn't make sense, I'm a ps3 noob, I have experience with cfw on my psp but don't have a clue about the ps3 scene, and if it is worth it anymore.
I do currently also have an xbox and may decided to just stick with that and maybe flash the drive on that but a ps3 would be handy because the blu ray would be handy too.
Just stick to the Xbox 360 and flash the drive. If you get a newer PS3 with firmware higher than 3.55 you have to buy a dongle that is able to let you downgrade. Also for newer titles you need the true blue dongle (correct me if I am wrong here) and specially patched games.
Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.
Yup Eisherz you are correct. TB supports new games, but only the games that they patch, and they arent that fast at releasing them.
And with the current cloners patching the suicide code on the TB (still not tested properly) TB will most likely not release any new patches for a while until they block the cloners.
Forget the PS3, even $ony is moving onto the PS4, so the console is soon to be dead in both official means and homebrew scene. I am not a xbox fan boy, dont even own one, I have a ps1, ps2, psp and 2 ps3, but with the illegal activities $ony have been up to they no longer deserve any of my money, I shall not be buying another $ony product again! And I suggest you do the same unless you agree to their draconian and illegal Terms of Service!
Just recently they removed 2 games from the PSN store for the PS Vita as they could allow an exploit to play PSPISO games, now eve though who bought those games cannot download them again if they need to, $ony have yet again stolen purchased products from their customers!
Do you really want to give your money to a company which will steal back items you have paid for cos they dont want a minority of people to use it for other means?!

If you can get a PS3 with V3.55 lower system, then just install the CFW and you can play all the V3.55 or lower games without any other items. if you want to play V3.55 higher games, then you need to buy the PS3 True blue.
If you get a PS3 with V3.55 higher system, you need to buy the E3 flasher to downgrade your PS3 first. and then buy the PS3 True blue to play V3.55 higher games.
In my opnion, if you can get a V3.55 lower system, that will be very good, you can just play V3.55 lower games, or buy a PS3 true blue to play other games. But if you can only find a higher version PS3. i recommend not buy it, it will cost much more about the E3 flasher, and the installation is very complicated if you are newbie.
i was ready to flog my ps3 3.55 cfw and stick with my xbox and xk3y then heard the trueblue is getting the eboots sorted for 3.56+ games so i kept it and then got a 3d tv which the ps3 also is (3d bluray player) only thing about that sony being sony is for some new 3d titles you have to update to watch them which is .......... well sony, and updating from 3.55 is a big no no. all in all its a 3 machines, a console, a bluray player and a 3d bluray player
