Hi, I just bought a PS3 on eBay with YLOD. I got it working but it doesn't read discs.

When I insert a disc the laser lights up for a second while moving up and down a couple times, then turns off.
The disc doesn't spin.
The the busy clock icon on the PS3 just spins.
The blue light on the front of the console stays solid blue.
No CD/DVD icon shows up under the Video or Game icon groups.

This is my first PS3 so I don't know for sure what it's normal behavior should be.

I took this video of the problem [ 35 seconds ] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0EUwzzgqxDA

I've been searching for a while and haven't found a conclusive answer. I assume the laser hasn't gone bad since it lights up?

Does anyone know what the problem is and/or could share some good links, resources, etc. on the subject?

Additional Info:

CECHG01
The warranty sticker was intact when I received it.
The green light never comes on.
I wiped the hard drive and updated.

I have the same problem with my CECHG03 - PS3 (from end of 2007 I believe) except the box switches on perfectly and I can access the XMB with no problem... Have read that quite a few users have had problems with the drive with machines from around the end of 2007!

I was in the middle of a game when it got stuck on loading and since then no action jackson :(

The PS3 loads disks BUT won't read either CD's, DVD's and/or Blu-rays.

I believe the PS3 disk reader has two sets of lasers, one red for CD's and DVD's and one blue for BD so my take is that the motor is doomed.

Now, you can get refurbished drivers but these are quite expensive IMO and you still need to carry over the circuit board from the old drive to the new as these are paired to the motherboard.

I would also like to know if anyone had any experience with anything similar and how the best way would be to get around the problem?

I replaced the laser mechanism and it works fine now.

That's great news...

Was it difficult to change?

Was first thinking of swapping the whole BD unit but if it's a simple enough operation I would go for the same as you did as it comes in a bit cheaper ;-)

Thanks for coming back btw...

I didn't know you're suppost to take the disc out first...so no. It was horrible. But other than that, it was fine.

Hi flackend,

Am I right in thinking that the actual drive motor is also an integrated part of the laser lens unit?

I saw there was a pretty good instructional work through on ifixit so I may just give it a go...
