PS3 freezes when reading external hard drive

I need some help here.
I run a 1TB external hard drive full of movies and TV shows, I have not had this problem for almost 2 years. Only today when I added about 20GB more onto it, I have about 400GB free. It started to pause / stutter when listing the directory files. It also would crash if I tried to play any of the files. It just seems very strange...
