ok so i removerd my hdd from a broken 60gb model and was going to put it into a external hdd caddy except it doesn't fit. I tried my laptops and that fits but also i compared them both and noticed that they have different ends. The laptops has lots of little spikes and fits fine where as the ps3s has something completely different. could anyone tell me why this has a different end to it when clearly you are ment to able to switch out hdd in the ps3.

The PS3's internal hard drive has to be a 2.5" SATA hard drive.

Judging by your description of your laptop hard drive, I'd guess that it's an IDE hard drive and your caddy is built for IDE drives.

You'll have to get a new caddy, unfortunately. One that handles SATA drives.

You can get a new one from between $10 and $15 at Newegg. I personally like the Rosewill ones.

I forgot:

If you don't want to buy another caddy, you CAN check out SATA-to-IDE adapters. I haven't worked much with hard drives - I've never felt the need to swap out my drives, and the only external drives I have are USB-interfaced - so I can't tell you if there are any that would be able to help you do what you need to do.

I have a couple of these:

Small, screwless design. $15. There are cheaper ones. Don't be fooled by "uses 2 USB ports for power" complaints. I only use 1 and it works fine.
